Lovely line marker used in Chinese building construction with, China’s most famous poet, Li Po aka Li Bai daydreaming between two pots of wine carved on the side. Complete with no damage and still functional. Circa late Qing Dynasty- this is only the third one I have ever seen outside of a museum and the only one with Li Po. L: 14cm/5.5in and H: 6cm/2.4in. The following is my favorite poem by him. Drinking Alone: I take my wine jug out among the flowers to drink alone, without fr...

Rare one of a kind astrological animal (tiger) from the Western Jin Dynasty- the front legs may have been ground down. Fantastic detail with traces of a thin lead glaze, noticeable from the areas of silver patina (see 4th enlargement). L: 10.1cm/4in and H: 4cm/1.6in. See last image for reference of Yueyao vessel with somewhat identical dating to the Western Jin.

Good Jizhou glazed jar from a Jiangxi kiln with lid circa Southern Song Dynasty. Please note that the lid and body are slightly different as the lid’s glaze lacks the craclature of the body with more of “tea dust” type glaze. Possibly from the same kiln- “matched but not married”. Having said this they look good together and unless closely scrutinized its hard to notice. There is a small chip and tiny frit on the lid, and tiny hairline that does not go through to the othe...

Rare pair of gray stoneware Cizhou type funeral jars with ivory/white slip, clear glaze and appliqué human figures on the neck, circa Southern Song to Yuan Dynasties. Usually this style is found in a Qingbai glaze and these are the only ones I have seen in Cizhou. Possibly these were not meant to have lids as the mouth rim is glazed (normally if Chinese ceramic piece has a lid, the mouthrim is left unglazed). Some of the clear glaze has fitted off exposing the white slip but does n...

Good small stone (probably basalt) scraper/adz from the Maori people- very hard, cannot be scratched with stainless steel. Polished on one side only with nice sharp edge. This should predate European contact since utilitarian objects like this would have been replaced by metal materials, so this is dated of 1300CE-1800CE. I bought this in a flea market in Auckland about 30 years ago. L: 5.5cm/2.2in and W: 2.5cm1in.

Very fine polished shouldered stone axe from the late Neolithic Period, found in Nan Province Thailand near the Lao Border. I acquired a collection of these a couple of years ago and have been holding this one back since was the best of the lot. The stone is very hard and cannot be scratched on the polished surface with stainless steel and is in very good condition with only a couple chips on the softer part of a still serviceable cutting edge. This piece feels good in the hand and is ...

Very rare bamboo rice cutter from Southern Laos, most likely this is from one of the ethnic minorities up in the hills. 60 years old is a ballpark guess on the age, an unusual item and the only one I have seen. Lovely patina- the blade is rusted but no damage and the handle has some bug holes and is fairly delicate. H: 43cm/17in and W: 31cm/12.7in.

Fine and rare skirt group from the Li ethnic (Run speaking dialect) group Hainan Island. I acquired this piece on a trip to Hainan Island in 1987. This is composed of three panels- the upper one is an all natural dye geometric pattern, the center one is quite interesting, incorporating both the mother/son motif as well as a “Hercules” and anthropomorphic design- the lower panel is a zoomorphic design (possibly deer?). The backing is quite stiff- most likely linen or a bast thread...

Unusual lacquered line marker used by either masons or carpenters from Yunnan, China along the Lao border. Carved in the shape of a mythical Qiling beast, the powder (which appears to be a mixture of graphite and coal dust) holder is made from a bamboo section. There is small piece broken off the hexagonal chrysanthemum spool but is in over all good condition for an antique, still functioning artisan’s tool circa. 19th CE. L: 13cm/5in and W: 7cm/2.8in.

Nice set of copper boxes with blue enameled lids usde to keep a calligrapher’s seal and seal paste. The seal box has the famous Lantingji Xu - “Preface to Poems at the collected at the Orchid Pavilion”, written during the Eastern Jin Dynasty, incised on the back. This is considered to by many Chinese literati to be the greatest example of calligraphy of all time. These date are pre 1970 possibly much earlier and were made at the same workshop. Good condtion no damage. The sea...

Ensemble of shards of classic Song Dynasty stoneware Guan yao and Ding yao pieces. The Ding is particularly nice with intact foot rim and lovely remnants of impressions. I’ve thrown in one Jun shard although I am not a 100% sure on this one- the lipped rim anomalous. Scale is noted in cm in last enlargements. Ideal for the serious collector or student. Lovely gray pottery head of a smiling woman from the Han Dynasty, Sichuan province. Early funerary art from Sichuan is quite distinct from the Han from the Central Plains of Shaanxi. In general Han Sichuan images show more emotion in their expressions and are far less abstract. Prior to their assimilation during the Qin Dynasty, Sichuan was composed of ethnically and politically separate non Han cultures. In my opinion this can be easily seen in the temperament and style of their a...

Nice pair of agate Slit Ring Discs, with bevel on one side, (jue) from the Bronze Age Dong Son Culture circa 1000BCE to 100CE. These are unusually large for this type.
