One of a kind, stoneware amphora with brown and black inner glaze, circa 11th century Jin Dynasty. I have only seen one other Chinese ceramic in this shape, which was a Song Dynasty Yaozhou piece described as being a plummet/plum bob. This piece had a couple of firing chips on the mouth which I filled and simply covered with gold leaf and lacquer, a museum quality perspex stand is included. Item H: 12.8cm/5in and D: 6.8cm/2.6in.

Good Jizhou glazed jar from a Jiangxi kiln with lid circa Southern Song Dynasty. Please note that the lid and body are slightly different as the lid’s glaze lacks the craclature of the body with more of “tea dust” type glaze. Possibly from the same kiln- “matched but not married”. Having said this they look good together and unless closely scrutinized its hard to notice. There is a small chip and tiny frit on the lid, and tiny hairline that does not go through to the othe...

Unusual 3 paneled tufted blanket from the Rawang ethnic group in the Kachin State, Burma. The field is woven from bast fiber (possibly hemp), the reddish head ends have an animal hair weft, either goat or dog. There are a few areas that have a bright colored commercial yarn but other then that all natural dyes. In the red field there are some bits of missing weft noted in enlargements. This piece is circa 1950 (plus or minus), definitely old an old piece. The Rawang are an upland living in...

Lovely line marker used in Chinese building construction with, China’s most famous poet, Li Bai aka as Li Po daydreaming between two pots of wine carved on the side. Fine and rare old rattan “tali” basket with a contracted mouth from the Idu Mishmi ethnic group of Arunachal Pradesh, India. In India they are primarily animist but in China where they are known as the Lhoba they have a strong spiritual affiliations with Tibetan Buddhism. Google “Bamboo and Cane Culture of Arunchal Pradesh” and you will get a good description of this regional craft. As Sino/Arunachal Pradesh border is disputed with China (it should be noted this where the D...

Quirky and eclectic collection of 35 small repousse copper plaques or tokens (possibly garment ornaments). These were collected in Dali, Yunnan, China in the late 1980s. No two are exactly alike and they seem to be influenced by Tantric Buddhism in that the endless knot, parasol, lotus throne, and temple banner motifs are represented in this lot as well as more traditional Chinese symbols such as bats and butterflies. In the last image I have shown a Qilin the only image in this ...

Rare ceremonial rice cutter from the Karen people (this particular one is from Northern Thailand). This knife would only be used on the first cutting of the season and as with most all of the rice cultivators in Asia there is a great deal of ritual and importance given to this act, regardless of the religion i.e. Buddhist, animist, Hindu etc. The handle has a wonderful original patina and the blade is till quite sharp.Circa 60 to 100 years old. I am always fond of these sorts of things...

Colorful full length two paneled men’s tube sarong from Ende, Flores Island, Indonesia. I bought this new in 1988, and it has been in storage since then, having washed it once once. The brightly colored bands are made with commercial silk thread weft threads. The rest of the piece is made of handwoven handspun natural dyed cotton, with two bands of ikat. There are tiny weaving flaws here and there (little spots of broken threads, but no holes) otherwise pristine original condition....

Rare early 20th century textile from the Mulao ethnic group Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Province. Little is known about these textiles other than they show a close affinity with Maonan weavings and are no longer being woven by this people. This is a two paneled blanket with original border and supplementary weft silk and cotton embroidered pattern of birds, mythical animals and flowers on a cotton field “key fret” pattern. Good condition given its age- there are some patches on the...
