Collection of five Gaden Tangka Tibetan coins minted between 1840 and 1930. Frequently (and erroneously) called Dalai Lama coins which were struck as presentation gifts to monks in the late 1940s- were made of pure silver), these are approximately 70% silver mixed with 30% copper. The most common issues are from 1897 to 1925 and will date these as such. Reference: Oriental Numismatics Society, Occasional Paper #17, N.G. Rhodes 1983. These are quite attractive pieces with Tibetan script on side a...

Wedding cover panel from the Tujia ethnic group Southern China (Hunan or Guizhou Province). Made from all natural dyes and handspun cotton with some silk floss embellishments in the weft embroidered pattern. Quite old- circa late 19the century. There are few threadbare areas and couple with missing weft thread, but good given its age. I had this framed in Miao “egg” cloth. L: 94cm/37in and W: 37cm/14.5in.

Classic example of Papuan New Guinea art in the form of a mask made from mud, a turtle shell a few lyre bird feathers and ochre pigment. I acquired this in 1988 from a dealer who personally bought it along the Upper Sepik River and it was around 30 to 40 years old when he got it. There is some pigment loss and a crack in the mud on the side noted in enlargements. H: 22cm/18.5in and W;16.5/6.5

Extremely rare grinding stone from the late Neolithic, Tham Hua Phu Culture (100 BCE-100 CE) located along Mekong River near Luang Prabang, Laos. I have been collecting ancient stone tools for many years and this is the only mortar I have ever seen. This is a firm attribution as I personally purchased these direct from local villagers near the site. Perfect original condition. A very Zen little piece which could still be used for any budding alchemists out there. L: 7.5cm/3.4in and W: ...

Rare net repairing tool from the Vietnamese Nùng ethnic minority, who are closely related to the Zhuang people in Southwest China. This is carved from buffalo horn and still has a length of handspun plant fiber cord. This difficult to date as I can find no references on this particular item, suffice to say it predates the use of cheaper and easier to obtain plastic versions, so a conservative dating of about 40 years will do. Perfect condition and L: 19cm/7.5in. Free shipping via HK Reg...

Exquisite inside painted glass crystal bottle depicting 7 tigers in a mountain landscape. This piece is dated 1987 which marks the height of contemporary Chinese Arts and Crafts as this coincides with opening up of the PRC and its eagerness to highlight the skill of their traditional artisans. Pieces from this period are much sought after by Chinese collectors since quality has since then declined. The quality of this piece may be recognized by realistic three dimensional details and t...

Tibetan Buddhist “windhorse” woodblock with loads of auspicious symbols (trigrams, dorjes etc) for printing small prayer flags about 40 to 50 years old, still perfectly usable (I’ve thought of making cards with this but never got around to it). The “wind horse” has its origins the earlier Bon folk religion but has been incorporated to Tantric art for the past couple of hundred years. I’ve researched few of interpretations of this symbol, which are quite complex so suf...

Rare phallic charm from Lamphun Northern Thailand- serendipitously enough, where they have an annual sausage festival. Originally these were worn by men at the waist and were thought to protect the wearer from any harm to his penis and in a more general sense they also are believed to bring luck especially in terms of “wealth generating or protection”, so a woman might be kept in your cash box to increase your cash flow or a woman might keep one in her purse to prevent it being ...

Very fine old wool pangden cloth- all hand spun wool and natural dyes. This piece is an exceptionally large piece consisting of 5 panels, circa 40 to 50 years old. I have had quite a few of these in the past and this is one of best I have seen. The weave is very tight and heavy and would make an excellent small blanket or throw rug. In the past these were worn by married women, but these days they are a fashion accoutrement for the modern Tibetan woman. This piece is in excellent...
