Rare ceremonial men’s “bell” cape (khing ta zhi) from the Sothern Chin ethnic group in Burma- this piece would have been worn during religious and planting festivals; please see last enlargement for a couple of guys wearing them. This piece is constructed of handspun threads being sewn together from two panels. This textile is at least 80 years old, possibly being as early as 1900. The weaving technique on this piece is quite delicate and complicated. The weft thread is und...

The high footrim and lipped mouthrim would indicate this piece is early Northern Song, there is firing ring in the center where another piece would have been stacked on top during the firing process. The glaze has an even green hue with nice craquelure and smooth surface patina (not at all dry and flaky). The body is beautiful white stoneware. Aside from a few frits on the mouthrim this is in perfect condition. D: 14.9cm/5.8in and H: 6.7cm/2.6in.

Nice strand of Kushan/Bactrian of mixed stone (mostly carnelian) beads. I acquired these along with coins dating from 1st- 4th CE from the same site in North West Pakistan, so these can be dated no later than 1500 years old. There are a few agate and quartzite beads in the lot, some with traces of “etching”. The crescent shaped beads would have originally small ringed shaped ornaments that have been drilled and “knapped” to some extent to accommodate them being strung. Plea...

Old song bird catcher from the Minang people of Central Sumatra. I bought this in Padang in 1988 and it was already old at the time, so I can date this to about 1950. A classic honey trap, right out of the KGB spy book. A hot and seductive female bird is placed in the back of the cage and when a dumb male bird comes along and lands on the perch in front this will trip a peg that will cause the net in the front to come down and now he is caught. Good Kayan Orang Ulu gawai rice festival ceremonial mask, circa 40 years old, from Sarawak. I bought this piece in Kuching, Sarawak in 2003. This mask would be held by the teeth on a piece of rattan on the inside. Used only twice a year for rice planting and harvesting festivals (gawai), these gatherings were usually a good excuse for a party and celebration to encourage the spirits to ensure a good harvest. Very rare, large lidded rattan basket from the Nung Rawang ethnic group of Northern Burma, Kachin State. The Rawang are a subgroup of the Kachin people and live in some of the last great wilderness forests left in Burma.
