Unusual “pile” of old glass cylinder beads picked up in Mae Sot, Thailand along the Burmese border about 10 years ago. These are from Burma and were probably meant for Victorian Era, British colonials who used them for beaded curtains. I assuming these are of Bohemian, Czech manufacture but am certain that they are old- circa late 19th/early 20th century. There are 20 strands with around 20, 8cm beads per strand and total length of 1.75cm/5ft9in ea, i.e. about 400 beads. A few are br...

Fine and rare Toraja, Sulawesi seko mandi (funeral shroud) possibly from Seko village. The Torajans have elaborate and often excessive burial rites (depending on the wealth or status) of the deceased and death does not have the grim connotations as it does in the West, the bodies are disinterred once a year washed, dressed and walked around the village. This piece has the classic sekong pattern consisting of interlocking hooks and has been interpreted as interlocking arms welcoming the...

Early Northern Song bowl bowl, with broad lip around the mouthrim. The body is high fired with a greenish glaze. Excellent original condition, no damage. I tend to think this is trying to emulate either a Ding or Qingbai type. I have seen three of this type bowl recently and all have some out of Sichuan, so most likely from a Southern Kiln. D: 17.7cm/7in and H: 6cm/2.4in.

Eclectic strand of spherical wood, cylindrical bone and buffalo tooth beads, from the Chin ethnic group in Myanmar. Some of the bone beads have been dyed to resemble pumtek heirloom beads, possibly by a wax resist method. These were collected in the 1980s and had some age at the time so I will date around 1960. Total L: 71cm/28in.

Rare early 20th century Yi minority lacquered box constructed from leather. I purchased this piece in a Bai minority, weekly market in Yunnan near Dali around 2002. I assume this is now an extinct craft no longer being done because of the availability of cheap plastic items as well as the migration of artisans to better paying jobs in the city. Very minor lacquer losses on the edge. Excellent condition. H: 5cm/2in

Beautiful women’s skirt from the Bahnar (Ba Na) ethnic group from the Central Highlands of Vietnam, woven from fine handspun cotton using all natural dyes. The weaving is very intricate and refined, note the use of narrow warp ikat bands throughout this piece. This piece is in perfect condition and dates to 1960 to 1970. The center panel is stitched loosely at the top as it was meant to be used as a pocket. Google Bahnar Bob Mc Kerrow to view photos of women wearing this kind of ...
