Unique signed old, men’s blanket from the Biboki region, West Timor. The writing is different from the center then it is from the ends so perhaps, this is a dedication or blessing rather than a signature. W: 114cm/44.8in and L: 186cm/73in, except for the yellow and blue lines this is woven from all naturally dyed handspun thread. Dating circa 1950 to 1960.

Exceptionally rare baby blanket from the Tujia weavers of Longshan County, Hunan Province, China. I have been looking for one of these for years and this is the first complete blanket I have ever found, albeit the lower two border panels come from a different piece. This incorporates the unique white tiger motif (see enlargement #3) which is believed to give the baby protection. The there is a repair to the border panel and the central cotton panel has some holes and has unraveled at the...

Fine old Shan Burmese lacquer box, circa early 20th century with one tray and depicting monkeys playing in foliate background. This piece is a real classic beauty (IMHO). There are a couple of repairs at the edge of the rim noted in enlargements as well as craclature on the surface and nicks around the foot. H: 19.2cm/7.6in and D: 22cm/8in. Please note I put a grain of rice in the last enlargement to highlight the finely detailed work.

Nice old persimmon shaped water dropper from Korea with bamboo motif. As I am unfamiliar with Korean ceramics I will date and guarantee this to be “vintage” (pre 1980s) but possibly 19th century. It shows definite signs of wear and normal usage and the white glaze shows a depth that I have seen in Qing and Ming Chinese porcelain. I have priced this low so there may be bargain here for a knowledgeable collector of Korean wares. D: 7.4cm/2.9in and H: 5.4cm/2.1in. Good condition...

Fine and rare pair of “rice gods” carved from durable iron wood (Belian) from the Kayan people of Sarawak. These were kept in the rafter in rice storage containers as protective spirits to guard the harvested padi. Nice old matched male and female (mother father) pair circa late 19th to early 20th century. Orignally these were on the end of a long stick that was stuck in the rice, but these have been cut to make them appear more “sellable”. I acquired these in Sarawak a...

Beautiful old Zhuang minority textile from Guangxi Zhuang/Guizhou province, China. Woven in two panels with silk embroidered “diamond and star” patterned border. There are small repairs noted in enlargement #4, minor fading on the left edge- all consistent with an old piece, some orange and brighter purple silk thread seem to be a later embellishment, indicating that this piece has been handed down several generations and highlights the well toned abrash of the original pattern....

Good circa late Republic to Early PROC, bell shaped inkstone with poem by the Tang Poet, Zhang Ji inscribed on the back. "The old moon is going down/ And the crows make a ruckus/ The world is covered with frost/ There are maples on the riverbank/ And the lights of fishing boats/ Drift with the current/ I fall into a sad sleep/ from the monastery on Cold Mountain/The sound of the bell/ Reaches the guest boat at midnight." The calligraphy is quite good on this and the stone is stil...

Rare Mishmi parang or da from the Digaro subgroup Arunachal Pradesh, India. This piece is contemporary and was acquired by a friend who took part in an expedition doing Ethnobotanical research in this remote region which borders Tibet five years ago. It is constructed of a bone pommel, hand forged blade, wood open scabbard, held together with copper wire and a pigskin carrying strap. There are only 8000 people in this particular ethnic group, so this would be of interest to the specialis...

Song Dynasty celadon bowl with molded and incised lotus design on the side. Examining the surface at first, I pretty much expected this piece to be heavily restored, but after poking and scratching it a bit this is just the original condition. Colorful hand woven beaded shoulder cloth from the Batak people, Sumatra. This piece is quiet lively and complicated with gold treads, and large “Rasta” colored diamond patterned warp embroidered bands. The “Dame Madi Hita” is Batak language and is embroidered on both sides of the center and refers to a blessing bestowed by the giver to the recipient. Ulos cloths play an important role in Batak communities in that they are ritually used to express affection and sincerity betw...

Stunning bronze sword handle from the Dian Kingdom that paralleled the Han Dynasty. Judging from the heavy triangular pommels and spikes near the blade, these were designed for close quarter combat that would look right at home in a fight scene out of Game of Thrones. This has a classic azurite patina with traces of the original iron blades. The Dian were a fierce and independent kingdom living in the vicinity of Dianchi Lake in Yunnan Province which chronologically paralleled the Warr...
