Original psychedelic painting by Bucklee Bell titled “Purple Haze”- acrylic on canvas, 40 x 50cm. 2008. Inspired by a Jimi Hendrix song with the same name and something else I'd rather not discuss. About the Artist: Bucklee Bell was born and raised in the state of Florida, USA. His first awareness of personally meaningful art was discovering the works of Surrealists, in particular Salvador Dali, Max Ernst, Man Ray and Yves Tanguy. In 1966 he moved to San Francisco, Califo...

Quirky glass ring emulating agate. This piece came from China but possibly is a trade object. I acquired this in a lot of other ancient pieces. A conservative dating to this is Qing Dynasty (1644-1911) and guarantees it to this period. There is one crack as well as some bubble burst pitting on the surface. Outer D: 2.8cm and inner D: 1.9cm.

Pair of “opium scales” from Laos, these came from Luang Prabang but were used through much of Southeast Asia. Most likely these were used in everyday trading whether it was pork meat to big chunks of opium and are quite simple with lead applied to one end as a counterweight and the scale being measured in hash marks along the sides. The opposite ends have been inlaid with small rectangular pieces of a darker wood (possibly buffalo horn?), a subtle but attractive decoration. Some wear as t...

Exceptionally fine and rare Jinghpaw (aka Jingpo in China) “pukhang” heirloom wrap around skirt from Burma’s northern most state of Kachin. This piece is woven in three panels from two ply handspun cotton thread and goat or dog hair yarn supplementary weft pattern. As I am assuming that goat hair has similar smell to sheep’s wool when wet, so most likely this is dog. This piece is intricately composed and tightly woven lacking the garish colors of a recent piece. The aniline pink...

Fine and rare five paneled skirt, from the Meifu subgroup of the Li people Hainan Island, circa mid 20th century. These kinds of textiles are unique among Chinese minority weavings as they combine supplementary weft brocade and tie dye ikat techniques. The colored threads in the brocaded panel are a combination of cotton, and polyester while the rest of the skirt is hand spun cotton and indigo in an abstract and zoomorphic design- pulled apart at the seam on top, no rips or holes. W: 132cm/5...

Quirky big round ball of green glass; possibly sand cast, this would have been used to carve a Buddha image, from Northern Thailand. In the 1950s the Japanese started exporting mold cast glass images to Thailand and Laos so this practice died out around then. There is a Buddha in there waiting to be realized, otherwise it looks nice on the windowsill, especially when the sun shines through it. Weight 210grams D: 5.5cm/2.2in.

Fine woman’s full length, three paneled tube sarong from Ende, Flores Island, Indonesia. This has been my possession since 1988 when I made a trip through Indonesia to study their arts and crafts, it was old when I bought and has remained in storage since then so I reckon this piece is at least 60 years old, possibly more. Although not as well known as Sumbanese and Ibanic ikat, the intricacy of the pattern and fine quality of the weave are more abstract and far superior. I had the goo...

Elegant ebony wood carving of a Balinese beauty circa 1960 to 1970- possibly older. This was obviously created for the tourist market and panders to the Western ideal of the female form of the time. I traveled to Bali in the 80s and 90s and found their arts and crafts leaning more to the impressionist side, where figures looked like the Navi from Avatar. Given its hardness and cost, ebony is usually only given to master craftsman to carve from. I tried digging into the bottom with my trus...

Good small copper alloy Buddha from Japan, circa post WW II, 1950s. This probably was meant to be in a small portable shrine. The body was cast separate from the nimbus- there is a slight crimp on one side which may be noted as an irregular edge in enlargements. This was made in the typical Chinese Tang style, a good example of how Japan assimilated and refined foreign cultural influences. H: 9cm/3.5in.

Rare “Phra Ha Roi” (literally 500 Buddhas but in practice means a lot of tiny images) late Haripunchai, terra cotta votive fragment. This piece dates to the late period circa 12th-13th CE from the last remaining Mon city state in what is now Thailand that was eventually conquered and assimilated into the Northern Thai Lanna Kingdom. Worn surface- as to be expected from an excavated pottery object and comes with a museum quality Perspex stand. H: 10cm/4in x W: 10cm/4in.
