Very rare ceremonial rice cutter from the Karen people (this particular one is from Northern Thailand). This knife would only be used on the first cutting of the season and as with most all of the rice cultivators in Asia there is a great deal of ritual and importance given to this act, regardless of the religion i.e. Buddhist, animist, Hindu etc. The handle has a wonderful original patina and the blade is till quite sharp but the tip is broken. Circa 60 to 100 years old...

Lovely Dian Kingdom chalcedony “nipple bead” circa 400 BCE to 100 BCE, with “moonlike” translucence. These button like ornaments were unique to this culture, they were used in decorating bronze buckles, funeral shrouds as well as clothing and strung as beads. Quite rare these days- I haven’t seen a “fresh” pieces on market for several years...

Lovely line marker used in Chinese building construction with, China’s most famous poet, Li Po aka Li Bai daydreaming between two pots of wine carved on the side. Complete with no damage and still functional. Circa late Qing Dynasty- this is only the third one I have ever seen outside of a museum and the only one with Li Po. L: 14cm/5.5in and H: 6cm/2.4in...

Good Jizhou glazed jar from a Jiangxi kiln with lid circa Southern Song Dynasty. Please note that the lid and body are slightly different as the lid’s glaze lacks the craclature of the body with more of “tea dust” type glaze. Possibly from the same kiln- “matched but not married”. Having said this they look good together and unless closely scrutinized its hard to notice...

Rare pair of gray stoneware Cizhou type funeral jars with ivory/white slip, clear glaze and appliqué human figures on the neck, circa Southern Song to Yuan Dynasties. Usually this style is found in a Qingbai glaze and these are the only ones I have seen in Cizhou. Possibly these were not meant to have lids as the mouth rim is glazed (normally if Chinese ceramic piece has a lid, the mouthrim is left unglazed)...

Good small stone (probably basalt) scraper/adz from the Maori people- very hard, cannot be scratched with stainless steel. Polished on one side only with nice sharp edge. This should predate European contact since utilitarian objects like this would have been replaced by metal materials, so this is dated of 1300CE-1800CE. I bought this in a flea market in Auckland about 30 years ago. L: 5.5cm/2.2in and W: 2.5cm1in.

Very fine polished shouldered stone axe from the late Neolithic Period, found in Nan Province Thailand near the Lao Border. I acquired a collection of these a couple of years ago and have been holding this one back since was the best of the lot. The stone is very hard and cannot be scratched on the polished surface with stainless steel and is in very good condition with only a couple chips on the softer part of a still serviceable cutting edge...

Unusual lacquered line marker used by either masons or carpenters from Yunnan, China along the Lao border. Carved in the shape of a mythical Qiling beast, the powder (which appears to be a mixture of graphite and coal dust) holder is made from a bamboo section. There is small piece broken off the hexagonal chrysanthemum spool but is in over all good condition for an antique, still functioning artisan’s tool circa. 19th CE. L: 13cm/5in and W: 7cm/2.8in.

Ensemble of shards of classic Song Dynasty stoneware Guan yao and Ding yao pieces. The Ding is particularly nice with intact foot rim and lovely remnants of impressions. I’ve thrown in one Jun shard although I am not a 100% sure on this one- the lipped rim anomalous. Scale is noted in cm in last enlargements. Ideal for the serious collector or student. Lovely gray pottery head of a smiling woman from the Han Dynasty, Sichuan province. Early funerary art from Sichuan is quite distinct from the Han from the Central Plains of Shaanxi. In general Han Sichuan images show more emotion in their expressions and are far less abstract. Prior to their assimilation during the Qin Dynasty, Sichuan was composed of ethnically and politically separate non Han cultures...

Classic Southern Song Longquan celadon bowl with carved lotus motif “bubble” shaped bowl. Rare and unusual small size. There is a discreet repair on the mouthrim noted in last enlargement (appears to be large chip repaired using the original piece) very difficult to notice with naked eye. D: 11.5cm/4.2in and H: 5.4cm/2.2in. This is not a shipwreck recovery piece (by the way).

Large circa Jin Cizhou type bowl with dark olive colored “teadust” glaze, there is a strong possibility that this was fired at the Yaozhou kiln. There is some soil accretion on the side but this can cleaned off, there was on small chip and hairline crack but I stabilized the crack where you can hardly notice and filled the chip and touched up with gold leaf noted in last enlargement. D: 21.8cm/8.6in and H: 7.5cm/3in

Nice little Khmer 12th CE lime pot. The lid and jar fused together while firing and were pried open afterwards leaving some chips and gaps. I have filled the largest two chips and done a simple gold leaf touch up on them. H: 8.6cm/3.4in and D: 8.7cm and 3.4in.
