Classic Miao baby carrier with butterfly design running throughout the piece, antique circa 60 to 80 years old. This piece would benefit greatly if dry cleaned to highlight the variety of silk embroidery styles and colors. There is some white cotton padding visible through some of the stitched patterns. L: 98cm/38.5in and upper W: 55cm/21.5in, lower W: 38cm/15.5in.

One of kind, single supplementary weft embroidered panel, L: 4.63m/14.2ft and W: 36.5cm/13.8in, from the Tujia ethnic group in Guizhou, Southwest China. Its function is a bit of mystery so it being a sling wrap around baby carrier is my best guess. Originally I thought it might be a traditional wedding blanket that would be cut and sewn with three panels together but there is no border pattern woven into this piece as is typical...

Late Qing blue and white porcelain vase with fine prunus and rockery pattern, most likely Guangxu period with apocryphal Jiaqing mark. The rim has been ground down to hide chips and contemporary sliver rim added. H: 28cm/11in and D: 19cm/7.5in (quite heavy almost 3kg).

Rare early 20th century Bai minority lacquered box constructed from leather. I purchased this piece in a Bai minority, weekly market in Yunnan near Dali around 2002. I have found many references to Bai lacquer but never any pictures or other documentation other than they grow the tree from which lacquer was made. One can assume this craft is no longer being done with the availability of cheap plastic items as well as the migration of artisans to better paying jobs in the city...

Exceptionally rare lacquer box from the Kachin ethnic group, Myanmar- a very old piece circa 100 years old, and one of only three I have ever seen. I acquired this piece about 15 years ago in Pagan. Nothing is documented (that I can find) on Kachin lacquer making although Sylvia Fraser-Lu, probably one of the world’s most well known Western expert on Burmese lacquer, mention’s that the best raw lacquer comes from the Kachin State...

Rare complete lacquer tobacco box with trays from the Karen hilltribe ethnic group Northern Thailand. Next to nothing has written about this craft amongst the Karen people although they are known for their water tight baskets using lacquer to seal the weave. H: 9.5cm/3.8in and D: 8.6cm/3.3in.

Old (100 years or more) leather belt from Tibet with 5 damascened silver patterns on iron fittings with complete buckle. There is some rust on the metal bits, maybe some Silvo polish on them will bring some of the shine back to the silver. All the pieces seem to be here except for a scabbard attachment. Total L: 118cm/46.5in. I bought this the Barkor bazaar in front of the Jokang in Lhasa almost 20 years ago; the leather is rough but serviceable.

Collection of four polished stone adzes and a mortar from the late Neolithic, Tham Hua Phu Culture (100 BCE-100 CE) located along Mekong River near Luang Prabang, Laos. This is a firm attribution as I purchased these direct from local villagers in the area. See enlargements for scale and condition.

Exquisite pair of late circa late 19th-early 20th CE loom weft supports carved into the shape of lotus buds with beautiful classic Khmer floral scroll motif and remnants of original red and black lacquer. I bought these in the Russian Market about 14 years ago in Phnom Pehn; a pair of equal quality is housed in the National Museum there. Each is carved from a single piece of wood. They are in very good condition with minor checks and knocks as to be expected from antique wooden implements...

Good long rectangular aventurine bangle from early central Thai Bronze Age Lopburi Culture circa 500 BC. There is some damage on one end, well documented in enlargements. Aventurine is commonly mistaken for Jade as it has the same degree of hardness (6.5 Mohs scale rating)...

Ensemble of six Qing Dynasty red agate and carnelian pieces carved into babies, bats and a “foo” dog face. Originally these were meant to be sewn on clothing- possibly a woman's cap, now they are strung on a macraméd faux silk chord. tThe pieces tend to hang too close together in the center or may be worn as a choker- a possible remedy might be to insert a wire into the chord to stiffen it up a bit...

Rare porcelaneous Qingbai bottle with original lid, there was one blob of glaze on the side which I have covered with gold leaf (if you can’t hide- decorate). If one were patient enough you could probably polish it down to reveal a green glass like area. There is one tiny chip on the bottom of lid otherwise no damage. Circa late Song to early Yuan. H: 6cm/10.2in and D: 14cm/5.5in.

Exceptionally fine early 20th century antique ikat sarong from the tiny island of Savu, Indonesia. The weave is a bit course indicating this was made from local native cotton, rather than handspun imported material. This piece is in perfect condition with 6 narrow patterned bands of floating weft. All dyes are organic also note in last enlargement that the narrow blue and white bands are ikat dyed in groupings of only four strands...
