Exceptionally fine and well detailed authentic votive terra cotta plaque from the Pagan Culture, Burma, 1200-1300CE. This is the only signed piece I have ever seen from this type of artifact. I acquired this along the Northern Thai/Burmese border around 15 years ago, at one time these were quite plentiful but I have not seen any authentic pieces for the past 5 years. Please note reference in last enlargement from “Ancient Art of Burma”. H: 9.5cm/ 3.8in and base W: 7cm/2.8in.

Fine and eclectic half fish/half woman pottery figure from the Tang Dynasty- these are quite mysterious figures and rare. The only reference I can find on these quirky figures is in Oriental Art: Conrad Harris & Estelle Niles van Osselt~ Vol. L No. 4. which asks more questions then it answers, although it is commonly believed these are somehow related to Nuwa-Fuxi (Two human headed snake) images that figure prominently in Chinese creation myths...

Pair of unique and eclectic Shan lacquer images, from Thai/Burmese border. These are used for grinding down to make medicine or magic potions. The larger one is molded of compressed powder (the head has been broken off and glued back on) and unused circa 50 years old, the smaller one is hand carved from what looks to be a root and is circa 100 years old...

Very unusual mortar made from a monkeys skull from the Shan State, Burma. As is the case in much of Southeast Asia, indigenous animist “spirit doctors” play an important role in Shan society and were not at odds with the local Buddhist Yuan sect as they believed these individuals were “monks” of a sort, imbued with magical powers. Potions for healing as well as creams smeared on the body for protection in battle would have been mixed and ground in this...

Nice Chinese basket most likely woven by the Zhuang or another of the many ethnic minorities in Guangxi Zhuang, China where I bought this over 20 years ago. This woven from split reed stalks and has a nice soft feel to it. This piece is quite old, 50 to 100 years (best guess). It has an unusual trapezoidal/oval shape and I like it for its sturdy Ethnographic simplicity. Minor unraveling of some of the weaves here and there but in very good condition given it age...

Unique ensemble of rattan and bamboo splitting knives circa 60 to 90 years old. As with all old Thai things even their simple daily use items were done with style and beauty, nowadays this sort of thing is imported in mass quantities from China. These tools would have been used to cut and split rattan and bamboo etc to create everything from baskets, village house walls to fish traps...

Old Chinese stone ware bottle. This shape is fairly generic and could date anywhere from Jin Dynasty to Ming, so I am taking the middle road and attributing it as Yuan. The mouth is chipped but it has a nice shape, note my photo editing software tend to truncate images, so this piece is more elegant in real life than the photos indicate. The glaze has traces of a paraffin patina. H: 24cm/9.5in and D: 18cm/7in.

Exceptionally rare, handled drinking vessel from the Liao (Khitan) people, circa 907 CE to 1279 CE. There are very few Liao pottery pieces in collections today so this piece would of interest to anyone specializing in this period. Please note last enlargement for reference of a similarly shaped gilt silver piece dating form this period. This particular type of jar shows a much closer affinity with Central Asian cultures than the Han...

Fine and rare fully glazed Tang Dynasty white glazed jar from the Gongxian Kiln, Henan China. Nigel Wood in his definitive work ~ “Chinese Glazes” considers Gongxian ware as one of the three Tang porcelains along with Xing and Ding ware. The photos do not do this piece justice as my editing software tends to truncate (squish) images, and shades of white are the most difficult for me to accurately capture...
