Fine and rare Sino Mongolian image of Amitayus (Medicine Buddha) circa 18th century, with repousse base and body and cast hands and head, the face is particularly lovely on this piece. There is one minor “knock” on the back of the base and is missing the vase which it would normally hold otherwise in excellent condition with traces of original gilt. H: 11.7cm/4.2in and base W: 6.2cm/2.5in.

Nice old panel from a temple runner circa late 19th century to early 20th century. This piece was woven in Baotou Inner Mongolia and was part of a longer rug where monks would sit. Complete selvedges on the side with most of the tan border missing on one end. It would be relatively easy for someone to put in a simple hem stitch to stabilize the ends. 58cm/22.8in x 60cm/23.5in.

Antique Chinese “lucky charm”, this item has a very quirky meaning; the squirrel in the grapes signifies having many children while the characters refers not having “pox”, being written on a comb signifies the reduction of having pox. In ancient China when plagues were rife child mortality was quite high so, taken in total it means to have many healthy children. Good quality silver L: 6.4cm/2.5in and W: 3.4cm/1.5in.

Antique Chinese “lucky charm” with a bat holding a sign (almost like a Chinese pawn shop), the side in enlargement one means to have success getting a job in the civil service and the other side translates “Amitabha” Buddha. Rare meditation sitting rug, constructed with cotton warp and wool weft, this piece was most likely woven in Khotan, Xinjiang and dates at least to the middle 19th century. Very rare and quirky phallic shaped small nephrite hairpin from the Ming Dynasty, the woman I bought this from referred to it as the “gao” (a crude Cantonese expression for penis- so it’s not just my imagination) jade. L: 8.3cm/3.2in. The last enlargement is a reference from Chinese Jade by Jessica Rawson and was found in a tomb near Shanghai. Excellent original condition with small naturally occurring inclusion at the back.

Rare mid 19th century rug (possibly earlier), woven in Ningxia with floral center medallion, key fret border. This type is the most valuable Chinese carpet, as it was favored for Imperial use in the Forbidden City (I am not saying it is Imperial). “Nings” as they are known to collectors are identified by their short pile making them very supple and the use of turmeric to make the yellow dye (note last enlargement) which was so prized in ancient times...
