Three old Dao Gong priest’s wooden stamps representing Pan Hung (Dragon dog) who is considered to be the ancestor of the Yao/Mien ethnic group from Guangxi, Lao or Vietnam. These items
are carved from wood, the larger one has a Chinese characters on the shoulder (which I assume was the owner’s name) and the one with a Tiger’s face has the Chinese character “wang”, meaning king carved into forehead. These were passed over paintings and religious books during ceremonies by the Yao/ ...click for details

Very rare and eclectic Yao ‘lingpai’ (literally a ‘decree/order tablet’) and it represents the traditional bamboo tablet (usually with a written demand or report) presented to the emperor in the past. It is used by many ethnic groups in Southern China as well as the Han. During ceremonies (be they Nuo, Yao or Taoist etc.), the priest stands in front of the altar with the ‘lingpai’ held in both hands in front of him and bows to the divinities while chanting incantations. It ca ...click for details

Outstanding heirloom wedding blanket cover from the tiny Maonan ethnic minority of Guangxi, China. This piece dates from the 19th century and is composed of a hemp fiber foundation, natural dyed cotton (possibly hemp and cotton combination) background field with floss silk supplementary brocade weft symbols of phoenix, flowers and butterflies, and is in perfect condition with no holes or tears (minor wear of course), which is testament to the durability and hard wearingness of hemp m ...click for details

Rare ensemble of three pairs of fortune telling bamboo culms. You will find these in almost any active Chinese Taoist temple or with any village shaman from a Sinicized minority in Southeast Asia. These are quite unique in that they are using the angular sections of the bamboo where all the others I have seen are simply carved from wood or use bamboo shoot tips. Difficult to date these so I can only go by the feel of the wear on the surface. The newest are the largest pair probably only 30 o ...click for details

Fine and rare two paneled silk embroidered “wedding blanket” from the small Maonan minority people of northern Guangxi Zhuang Province. This piece is 60 to 90 years old with a hand spun cotton foundation and hand spun silk. The frontal surface of the blanket is decorated with embroidered floral and phoenix symbols and key fret pattern highlighted by “floating weft” threads. The Maonan number just a little over 100,000 souls and are closely related to the Zhuang who are probably the ...click for details

Fine and rare circa early 20th century Yi minority lacquered box constructed from leather. I purchased this piece in a Bai minority, weekly market in Yunnan a few years ago. As the Yi and Bai are related ethnic groups it is possible that this is a Bai piece, but since there is really nothing I can find documenting Bai lacquer on leather making traditions I am assigning this to the Yi who do and also live in close proximity to the Bai. Excellent condition. H: 5cm/2in and D: 11cm/4.2in.

Unusual line marker used by either masons or carpenters from Yunnan, China along the Lao border. Carved in the shape of a mythical Qiling beast, the powder (which appears to be a mixture of graphite and coal dust) holder is made from a bamboo section. There is small piece broken off the hexagonal chrysanthemum spool but is in over all good condition for an antique, still functioning artisan’s tool circa 19th CE. L: 13cm/5in and W: 7cm/2.8in.
