Very unusual mortar made from what appears to be a monkeys skull, probably a langur or gibbon as they are the monkeys of this size from the Shan State, Burma where this came. As is the case in much of Southeast Asia, indigenous animist “spirit doctors” play an important role in Shan society and were not at odds with the local Buddhist Yuan sect as they believed these individuals were “monks” of a sort, imbued with magical powers. Potions for healing as well as creams smeared on the ...click for details

Very quirky bronze folk Buddha image, sort of “cubist” style. Difficult to date as it has no iconographical features other than the lovely silly grin that is found in almost all Lao village made pieces, from the condition of the bronze I have no problem putting this piece 19th CE or much earlier. This has no finial atop the head, if it did it broke off a long time ago, both hands are in depicted in the bhumiparsa mudra which is highly unusual and rarely (if ever) seen in classical Buddhist art- ...click for details

Exceptionally fine old coconut scraper made of solid golden teak carved in the shape of a tiger. I purchased this on a recent trip to Northern Thailand, where the vendor said this was 200 years old and from Mandalay, Burma but I think 70 to 90 years old is a more reasonable dating, and might quite possibly be in the local Lanna style. This is one of the nicest examples I have seen in quite a few years. It is in all original condition, just as when it came out of the village. Usually these ...click for details

Quirky and rare ensemble of seven tobacco pipes from the Lawai ethnic group of Southern Laos,(please read the notes under enlargements for description of materials on each piece). The simple bamboo ones are used by the women of this group while the more ornate ones are used by the men. Although old pottery pipes of Burmese/Thai/Khmer origin are fairly common, these are the first in this clay I have ever run across. Three of the ceramic ones are Yixing wares from Jiangsu, China, which were ...click for details

Late 19th ce/ Early 20th ce wood handled adz with hand forged blade. This item was made by the Minankabau people and sourced in the village of Bukittingi in the highlands of Sumatra in 1989. The handle is well polished through years of use with quite stunning bands of carved decoration on the handle. Condition good the only damage is some “checking” in the wood near the base of the handle. Handle length 43 cm, blade length 16.4.
