Very rare Northern Chin woman’s embroidered skirt circa 50 to 80 years old, Chin State, Burma. All hand woven in two panels with a silk warp and cotton weft. There is some minor fading in a few places but the condition and quality of the cloth is outstanding. Chin textiles are much under appreciated in the West due to the remoteness of their region as well as the subtle patterns which seem simple but are technically some of the most complex and intricate of any ethnic group in the wo ...click for details

Fine and rare Iban shaman’s pua circa 19th century. This miniature pua was used by Sarawak indigenous healers. It is colored with all natural dyes and the thick warp thread suggests that this was woven from native jungle cotton. Acquired on a recent trip to Sarawak, this only small pua a I saw out of well over a 100 pieces I examined. Aside from a couple of "pin holes", this textile is in perfect condition. L: 120cm/47.5in and W: 52cm/18.5cm.

Exceptionally fine and rare antique Iban pua kumbu with mythical snake “nabau” pattern. This pua was woven by an Iban mother and used in celebratory ceremonies to commemorate the first head taken by her son, where the head was paced on plate in the middle of the pua while drinking and feasting continued through the night. This powerful design was meant to control the deceased spirit as not to cause any harm to villagers. Although on the surface the intent of this piece seems a bit morb ...click for details
