Classic semi antique Laotian textile from the Tai Daeng ethnic group. This was acquired in 1991, just when Lao was opening itself for tourism and was about 30 years old at the time so this would date pre Vietnam War era. It is mounted onto a commercial Chinese chintz cloth border (looks original), made from all hand spun cotton and silk thread in the embroidery (except for the black pattern). There is one small repair noted in enlargements...

Fine and rare old hand spun and woven cotton textile from Luang Prabang, Laos with a powerful representation of a tiger and monkey with various symbols and key fret side borders. Comparing the dyes (note the well toned silk threads in last enlargement) to other dated Vietnam War era pieces, I saw during a recent visit, I would put this piece to at least 60 years or older. Excellent condition and mounted on a contemporary handwoven cotton backing and border...

Classic example of Papuan New Guinea art in the form of a mask made from mud, a turtle shell a few lyre bird feathers and ochre pigment. I acquired this in 1988 from a dealer who bought it along the Upper Sepik River and it was around 30 to 40 years old when he got it. There is some pigment loss and a crack in the mud on the side noted in enlargements. H: 22cm/18.5in and W;16.5/6.5

Nice old Burmese Jadeite bracelet circa 50 years old or more, there is an old crack on the surface and possible inclusion- but quite a bit of Jade stone went into cutting this piece. Nowadays most bangles are made from less jade to save costs and materials and also worth noting that new “dyed” jade will lose it’s color after a few years while a piece this old will stay the same. Outer diameter 7.4cm, inner diameter 5.5cm and thickness 1.4cm.

Very fine four paneled apron worn by married Tibetan women, made from all natural dyes and tightly woven twill handspun wool, the green and blue colors are quite subtle yet complex with some bands in the cloth only being 1mm in width. Fine and rare Toraja, Sulawesi, seko mandi which would have been draped over a coffin possibly from Seko village. The Torajans have elaborate and often excessive burial rites (depending on the wealth or status) of the deceased and death does not have the grim connotations as it does in the West, the bodies are disinterred once a year washed, dressed and walked around the village...

Exquisite vintage hand woven panel used for jacket or dress trims by the Miao people in Guizhou. Please examine close-ups to appreciate the exceptional detail of the handwork on this piece. I bought this in Kaili, Guizhou about 13 years ago and had it framed in handmade traditional embossed “mud cloth”, so could be used as wall hanging. Unframed W: 18cm/7.1in and L 133/cm/52.5in, framed W: 36cm/13.2in and L: 170cm/67in.

Good brush painting of a tiger by the artist Li Shou Lin dated 1978. Painted in the traditional style water color and ink mounted on silk and heavy paper. Unfortunately the mounting paper has suffered mold damage while the painting itself was affected in a minor way in the form of some discoloration, having said this if framed with new matting the flaw is very negligible. Please examine enlargements- will be mailed in a cardboard tube...

Rare two paneled bed child’s cover from the Daizu (aka Shan and Tai) ethnic minority of Southern Yunnan, China. To date this is only the third I have seen in this style. An unusual piece with fine embroidery, a hemp or bast fiber foundation and all hand spun threads. I would date this semi antique mid 20 century with mostly natural dyes. The only silk threads used in this piece appear to be the yellow...

Fierce Kayan Orang Ulu mask worn in rice harvesting "gawai" festivals. Circa 40 years old, from Sarawak. I bought this piece in Kuching, Sarawak in 2003. The mask would be held by the teeth on a piece of rattan on the inside. H: 27cm/10.5in and W: 15.8cm/6.2in.
