Semi antique Timor sarong made from all natural dyes and handspun cotton circa 1950/1960. Both top and bottom have embroidered panels. The ikat design is quite complex for a Timor ikat and resembles more of an Iban than Timor. There is 7cm x 4cm piece missing on one edge, noted in enlargements. L: 110cm/43.2in and H: 103cm/40.5in.

Very fine ikat and embroidered patterned men’s sarong from Timor Island. The weaving is in three panels on this piece and is exceptionally fine and supple. In excellent condition with a few minor frays on the selvedge only and a few small ink stains. Although by no means an antique, this is a genuine “cultural” item and not made for the “tourist market”- a realistic dating would be between 40 and 60 years old...

Unusual nephrite jade incense burner with human face acquired from an American estate and dates circa mid 20th century. This piece has an Art Deco (IMHO) feel about it but is actually emulating a very famous Shang Dynasty “fanding” (cauldron) that was excavated in Henan in 1959 and is currently in the Capital Museum Beijing. Quite a bit of jade went into carving this piece, at 1100 grams and is in good condition. At highest point: 11.3cm/4.4on and W: 6.7cm/2.8in.

Beautiful women’s skirt from the Bahnar (Ba Na) ethnic group from the Central Highlands of Vietnam, woven from fine handspun cotton using all natural dyes. The weaving is very intricate and refined, note the use of narrow warp ikat bands throughout this piece. This piece is in perfect condition and dates to 1960 to 1970. The center panel is stitched loosely at the top as it was meant to be used as a pocket...

Beautiful and intriguing Sumba men’s hinggi tunic with rare “pagi- sore” morning-afternoon design. Most hingis will mirror each other in their design at the top and bottom but this one presents us with one single picture. Incorporated into the pattern are horses which are typical wealth symbols with the Sumbanese as well as “sacred crocodiles” and lobsters...

This style of decoration is unique to this group and very difficult to make, as every tiny bit of tin has to be individually cut and crimped. Lovely old traditional Bhutanese woman’s dress, approximately 70/80 years old. This has a very refined weave with all the narrow stripes being made of silk and the wider bands of having a cotton warp and inner “sechu” silk embellished pattern which gives it a three dimensional feel. The colors are very soft and pastel and most likely natural...

Nice woman’s dress from Bhutan with yellow and white “aikapur” brocade pattern. Made from all raw silk in good condition although the bottom edge where it would have dragged along the ground has some minor fraying note in enlargements. I acquired this in Bhutan in 1996 from a little old lady sitting along the trail to Tiger’s Nest, Paro Taktsang before it burnt down. This was already old at the time so I will date circa 1960 (ish). L324cm/92in and W: 120cm/51in.

Classic semi antique Laotian textile from the Tai Daeng ethnic group. This was acquired in 1991, just when Lao was opening itself for tourism and was about 30 years old at the time so this would date pre Vietnam War era. It is mounted onto a commercial Chinese chintz cloth border (looks original), made from all hand spun cotton and silk thread in the embroidery (except for the black pattern). There is one small repair noted in enlargements...

Fine and rare old hand spun and woven cotton textile from Luang Prabang, Laos with a powerful representation of a tiger and monkey with various symbols and key fret side borders. Comparing the dyes (note the well toned silk threads in last enlargement) to other dated Vietnam War era pieces, I saw during a recent visit, I would put this piece to at least 60 years or older. Excellent condition and mounted on a contemporary handwoven cotton backing and border...
