Rare phallic charm from northern Thailand. This is the only one I have seen carved from a tooth. Originally these were worn by men at the waist and were thought to protect the wearer from any harm to his penis and in a more general sense they also are believed to bring luck especially in terms of “wealth generating or protection”, so one might be kept in your cash box to increase your cash flow or a woman might keep one in her purse to prevent it being “snatched”...

Nice old pair of Sino Tibetan burlwood bowls, circa late Qing Dynasty and Tibetan Yak Butter Tea bowl carved from burlwood, possibly Rhododendron circa 50 to 100 years old. Sino/Tibetan bowls D: 21cm/8.2in and H: 6.5cm/2.5in and D: 16.5cm/6.5in and H: 6cm/2.3in...

Colorful hand woven beaded shoulder cloth from the Batak people, Sumatra. This piece is quiet lively and complicated with gold treads, and large “Rasta” colored diamond patterned warp embroidered bands. The “Dame Madi Hita” is Batak language and is embroidered on both sides of the center and refers to a blessing bestowed by the giver to the recipient...

Nice pair of Jingdezhen porcelain Langyao red glazed bowls with well executed apocryphal Qianlong reign marks. These are from circa 1980s; they are a near matched pair although one is a little darker than the other. Please examine enlargement #3 to see the difference as well as to see the most accurate representation of the natural color. D: 12cm/4.8in and H: 6.5cm/2.5in.

Lovely pair of matched porcelain cups depicting a maiden in a rockery garden with an of the period Jingdezhen factory mark on the bottom "Manufacture under the supervisory of Nanchang City Trading Co in Jiangxi". This piece is circa 1960’s which have become quite collectable these days and no doubt increasingly more so in the future. Good condition with no cracks or chip, there was probably a brown colored rim on the mouth most of which has worn off...

Exquisite gold plated hand chased silver hairpin with floral/foliate scrolling pattern and hallmark. This appears to have never been used; I acquired it “accidentally” on a lot of things in a local Hong Kong auction and I found it at the bottom of a bag with a few other things that I didn’t even know it was included. This probably dates from the 1950’s or 1960’s (possibly earlier). The style is very traditional and no one can do this kind of workmanship these days...

Sumbanese “pagi-sore/morning afternoon” men’s Hinggi cloth, with a quite dramatic and powerful pattern. This type of ikat took twice as long to make as the top and bottomed are not mirroring each other, since usually the warp threads were fold over when tying off them to make ikat pattern. This piece is circa 1950 to 1970 all handspun threads with natural dyes. The size is quite impressive- L: 2.7/8.8ft and W: 1m/3.2ft

Lovely old teak figurehead from an old Chinese dragon boat, this circa 50 to 80 years old from rural China. It has a few checks in the wood but is still quite colorful and decorative- the tongue is hinged inside with a spinning ball on it representing a cosmic pearl. Dragon boat racing has been done in China for 2000 years, but in 1976 Hong Kong inaugurated the first international competition, and now today races are held world wide. L: 48cm/18in and H: 21cm/8.7in.

Fine and rare old rattan “tali” basket with a contracted mouth from the Idu Mishmi ethnic group of Arunachal Pradesh, India. In India they are primarily animist but in China where they are known as the Lhoba they have a strong spiritual affiliations with Tibetan Buddhism. Google “Bamboo and Cane Culture of Arunchal Pradesh” and you will get a good description of this regional craft...

Nice old small shoulder bag with fine silk cross stitch embroidery from the Akha hilltribe in Northern Thailand. This piece was purchased in Chiang Mai in the early 1980s and was an old piece at the time so a good estimate on the age would 50 to 60 years old. Please note this is not a patchwork tourist piece which is recognizable by different bits quilted together and having zippers etc...

Good Iban woman’s kain depicting tree of life with bamboo running the length of the bidang reaching above the forest canopy, circa 1950s. Aside from commercial warp thread on sides, it is composed of all natural dyes and handspun thread. There are the inevitable few pin holes and a few small tears on one side (this indicates where the skirt has been taken in to have a better fit on the waist). L: 188cm/46.5in and W: 51cm/20in

Magnificent all rattan hand woven Rawang “san phi” basket, from the remote Putao area in Northern Burma near the Tibetan border. This one is quite old circa 50- 80 years, in good condition (one repaired loop), still pliable and not brittle, with excellent natural patina. The Rawang are a subgroup of the Kachin people and live in some of the last great wilderness forests left in Burma. Arts of Asia 2007: Vol 37, #3, by Michael Howard has a good article on Rawang crafts...

Exceptionally fine Miao pictorial embroidered panel. This style is quite rare in Miao textiles as they tend to favor geometrical and abstract patterns- so possibly this was made by the Dong ethnic minority as the small “temple” images are reminiscent of their drum towers. The dominant theme in this piece are birds but temples, houses, people, butterflies, flowers, swastikas and ferns may also be seen...

Fine and rare Minangkabau song bird trap. I bought this in the old Dutch hill station of Bukittinggi Sumatra, Indonesia in 1988 and it was old then, so a circa 60 years old is a reasonable attribution as far as age goes. The Minangkabau are a matrilineal ethnic group from West Sumatra and Malaysia i.e. the women inherit the property rather than the men and this group plays an important current role in Indonesian politics...

Nice old Thai sticky rice “lunch box” in Lanna or Issan style. This is about 30 or 40 tears old with typical double wall construction. There are areas that have been lovingly repaired with some nylon cord. To the purist this may be seen as a distraction but I see time and an ethic where nothing was ever wasted- this was a valued very personal object. Next to it I have placed a contemporary one...

Wonderful old “farmer’s lunchbox” from Northern Thailand, used for carrying sticky rice to the fields for hard day’s work. This is probably about 50 years old possibly more, with a classic double wall construction. The contracted rim at the mouth is quite unusual and it is the only time I have seen this. In excellent condition it is made from split bamboo with the original natural fiber cord. H: 20cm/8in and W: 20cm/8in.
