Exquisite vintage hand woven panel used for jacket or dress trims by the Miao people in Guizhou. Please examine close-ups to appreciate the exceptional detail of the handwork on this piece. I bought this in Kaili, Guizhou about 13 years ago and had it framed in handmade traditional embossed “mud cloth”, so could be used as wall hanging. Unframed W: 18cm/7.1in and L 133/cm/52.5in, framed W: 36cm/13.2in and L: 170cm/67in.

Rare two paneled bed child’s cover from the Daizu (aka Shan and Tai) ethnic minority of Southern Yunnan, China. To date this is only the third I have seen in this style. An unusual piece with fine embroidery, a hemp or bast fiber foundation and all hand spun threads. I would date this semi antique mid 20 century with mostly natural dyes. The only silk threads used in this piece appear to be the yellow...

Fierce Kayan Orang Ulu mask worn in rice harvesting "gawai" festivals. Circa 40 years old, from Sarawak. I bought this piece in Kuching, Sarawak in 2003. The mask would be held by the teeth on a piece of rattan on the inside. H: 27cm/10.5in and W: 15.8cm/6.2in.

Wonderfully carved wooden Lanna Thai animal, the hole in the mouth and lightly incised symbol underneath the base indicate this was meant to be a “lucky charm” or fetish of sorts. H: 7.5cm/3in and W: 4.8cm/1.9in.

Rare tiger image carved from black coral; this has some Thai Khon script lightly incised on the surface indicating that this has some sort of “protective” power and is a fetish or amulet. The material is quite light in weight and has been lacquered with a patch of gold leaf applied-probably not more than 40 or 50 years old. H: 6.3cm/2.5in and W: 4.8cm/1.8in.

Beautifully carved red Nephrite jade cong with carved bands and face. This piece is probably mid 20th century although copies from famous Neolithic sites like Liangzhu and Hongshan were commissioned as early as the Qianlong reign for discerning collectors. D: L: 5.6cm/2.2in and W: 2.2cm/.8in. This kind of jade is quite rare so much of the value in this piece lies in the stone as well as the workmanship.

Exquisite pair of light turquoise small bowls with apocryphal zhuanshu seal script Yongzheng mark. It has been quite difficult trying to get the exact color with my photo editing software, so enlargement #3 best approximates the original color even if it does look a bit on the “lavenderish” side. These are exceptionally fine examples of Jingdezhen 1960s copies of imperial pieces and I will guarantee them to this time. Christies N.Y...

Unusual collection of 6 old “prayer cloths” from a Taoist Master’s ceremonial robe (see enlargement #7). For generic purpose’s these should be considered to be from the Mien group as they came from Vietnam and are circa 40 to 50 years old- woven from handspun cotton. They all have the same basic pattern indicating they are probably from the same priest’s outfit. These used to be quite easy to get about 15 years ago but now almost impossible to find...

Beautiful old classic Lao shoulder clothe, all natural dyes with hand spun silk threads. I picked this up on my first trip to Laos in the mid 1990s, at the Talat Sao Market, Vientiane and would date this to the 1970/80s. The fabric is incredibly soft and supple and may be worn (it is amazingly warm) as a scarf or hung as wall art. It has a few loose threads on the selvedge but otherwise in excellent condition with no holes or tears. W: 38cm/15in and L: 243cm/8ft.

Good monkey khik carved from wood, contrary to how I see these often advertised they have little to do with attracting women, but are worn by on the side by men for luck and prosperity. The symbolism goes way back to Hindu mythology where the Shiva lingam represents primordial creative energy and the Monkey God Hanuman embodies courage and devotion. L: 5cm/2in. Unlike the cast metal types, this is a one off item and good example of Thai folk art.

Magnificent Sumbanese ikat from Waingapu, made from all vegetable dyed handspun cotton thread. I picked this up in 1988 and can safely date this 1970-1980. Created by a master weaver the themes are typically Sumbanese with skull tree, serpents, and human figures. This is a lively piece using only three basic colors and symmetrical design to achieve a well balanced effect, missing in the weird and colorful contemporary weavings sold in the tourist bazaars of Denpasar, Bali...

Old 5 panel cover collected in Uzbekistan in the late 1990s. It is woven from all handspun and naturally dyed thread. The two central off white panels may be spun from some sort of bast fiber and the rest is wool. This mostly flat woven with some floating stitches and simple embroidered patterns, other than it came from Bokara and I don’t know ethnic group it is from. It is bordered on the ends with typical Central Asian ikat silk and I am guessing this piece is 50 years or more...

Quirky enameled aluminum repousse wood framed panel with two fish, “good luck” fu and dragon’s gate characters. This would have been given to someone after to graduating or obtaining a job promotion to wish them success in their future endeavors. The “socialist” aluminum and red enamels indicate this would have been made in the early period of the People’s Republic of China, predating the Cultural Revolution so it is from the 1950s or 60s...
