Very old (over 50 years) which is ancient by Burmese lacquer standards. This was possibly made by the Shan who favored dramatic geometric designs over the more figural Burman style. This has some fritting on the lacquer. H: 24cm/9.5in D: 18cm/7.1in.

Very rare woman’s skirt (pukhang) from the Kachin/Jingpo ethnic group, Northeast Burma. This style is very uncommon compared to the red wool types most commonly seen on the “ethnographic textile” market. This is a single panel with supplementary weft trim on the ends made of dog hair. Aside from tiny amounts of commercially dyed thread used on the borders as highlights this piece is made of all hand spun treads and natural dyes...

Nice ensemble of 7 small vintage saucers of Chinese porcelain from the Jingdezhen kilns. These date from the 1950s/1960s/1970s/1980s, so you have a good sampling showing the early People’s Republic export ware. Two have hairline cracks while one has a couple of chips on the rim. Diameters- 16cm to 10cm.

Charming blue and white porcelain flower pot with “shrimp and fish in a pond” motif in the style of Qi Bai Shi dated 1949 (possibly apocryphal). Center diameter: 10.3cm/4in and H: 11.8cm/4.6in. This is obviously a homage to this great artist whose talent was unmatched in the observational and paintings of the minutia of the natural world. This pot is titled “Shrimp Playing Around” painted in traditional characters. Personally I think this would make an excellent brushpot.

Fine old Burmese red lacquerware bowl with quatrefoil “ku-nan-kan-yat” motif which is one of oldest and more common designs, according to Sylvia Fraser Liu: Burmese Lacquerware. This one dates to circa 1950 to 1960; there are some cracks in the lacquer which is one of the few reliable determining any significant age besides minute detailing in the design...

Unique bast fiber blanket from Malipo, Zhuang and Miao Autonomous Prefecture, Wenshan County, Yunnan China near Vietnam. The border is composed of a bast fiber warp and weft: either hemp or “huo cao” fireweed. The center panels seems to be cotton but may incorporate some hemp as well but it is difficult to for me to tell as I have seen some very soft hemp cloth in the past...

Exquisite inside painted glass crystal bottle depicting 7 tigers in a mountain landscape. This piece is dated 1987 which marks the height of contemporary Chinese Arts and Crafts as this coincides with opening up of the PRC and its eagerness to highlight the skill of their traditional artisans. Pieces from this period are much sought after by Chinese collectors since quality has since then declined...

Fine, old Burmese lacquer betel box with black red and green pan-bwa motif and “dancing monkey” figures. From personal experience (I have been traveling to Burma and it’s lacquer workshops since 1986), I can say all genuinely old Burmese lacquer items will show signs of ware such as cracks and chipping along the edged rims as they were used on a daily basis in everyday life, pristine old lacquer pieces with no signs of use are as rare as, authentic Rembrandts...

Complete set of “machete”, scabbard and small “piru” carving knives from the nomadic Penan/Punan people of Sarawak. I bought this from a villager at a Penan “reservation” Batu Bungan outside of Gunung Mulu Park.
