Rare and unusual shallow bowls enclosed in pewter. The original blank dishes were imported from Japan and then decorated in Hong Kong. By the 1980s this trade died out due to rising property costs as well as the transitioning of the Hong Kong manufacturing sector to China. This pair is in excellent condition and perfectly matched with floral panels and medallions. These are also the only examples I have seen jacketed in pewter. D: 17cm/6.9in and H: 4cm/1.6in. Dated to 1970’s.

Fine and rare old rattan “tali” basket with a contracted mouth from the Idu Mishmi ethnic group of Arunachal Pradesh, India. In India they are primarily animist but in China where they are known as the Lhoba they have a strong spiritual affiliations with Tibetan Buddhism. Google “Bamboo and Cane Culture of Arunchal Pradesh” and you will get a good description of this regional craft...

Nice old small shoulder bag with fine silk cross stitch embroidery from the Akha hilltribe in Northern Thailand. This piece was purchased in Chiang Mai in the early 1980s and was an old piece at the time so a good estimate on the age would 50 to 60 years old. Please note this is not a patchwork tourist piece which is recognizable by different bits quilted together and having zippers etc...

Good Iban woman’s kain depicting tree of life with bamboo running the length of the bidang reaching above the forest canopy, circa 1950s. Aside from commercial warp thread on sides, it is composed of all natural dyes and handspun thread. There are the inevitable few pin holes and a few small tears on one side (this indicates where the skirt has been taken in to have a better fit on the waist). L: 188cm/46.5in and W: 51cm/20in

Magnificent all rattan hand woven Rawang “san phi” basket, from the remote Putao area in Northern Burma near the Tibetan border. This one is quite old circa 50- 80 years, in good condition (one repaired loop), still pliable and not brittle, with excellent natural patina. The Rawang are a subgroup of the Kachin people and live in some of the last great wilderness forests left in Burma. Arts of Asia 2007: Vol 37, #3, by Michael Howard has a good article on Rawang crafts...

Fine and rare Minangkabau song bird trap. I bought this in the old Dutch hill station of Bukittinggi Sumatra, Indonesia in 1988 and it was old then, so a circa 60 years old is a reasonable attribution as far as age goes. The Minangkabau are a matrilineal ethnic group from West Sumatra and Malaysia i.e. the women inherit the property rather than the men and this group plays an important current role in Indonesian politics...

Nice old Thai sticky rice “lunch box” in Lanna or Issan style. This is about 30 or 40 tears old with typical double wall construction. There are areas that have been lovingly repaired with some nylon cord. To the purist this may be seen as a distraction but I see time and an ethic where nothing was ever wasted- this was a valued very personal object. Next to it I have placed a contemporary one...

Wonderful old “farmer’s lunchbox” from Northern Thailand, used for carrying sticky rice to the fields for hard day’s work. This is probably about 50 years old possibly more, with a classic double wall construction. The contracted rim at the mouth is quite unusual and it is the only time I have seen this. In excellent condition it is made from split bamboo with the original natural fiber cord. H: 20cm/8in and W: 20cm/8in.

Quirky “chief’s” stool carved out very heavy Belian Iron Wood, from an Ibanic group. This is one solid piece except for the legs which have been inserted like dowels. The wood has a nice smooth patina although I don’t think it is very old- I bought it Kuching, Sarawak about 15 years ago. L: 99cm/39in and W: 34cm/13.5in. Iron wood is quite valuable these days, excellent condition with no cracks or checks.

Very old (over 50 years) which is ancient by Burmese lacquer standards. This was possibly made by the Shan who favored dramatic geometric designs over the more figural Burman style. This has some fritting on the lacquer. H: 24cm/9.5in D: 18cm/7.1in.

Very rare woman’s skirt (pukhang) from the Kachin/Jingpo ethnic group, Northeast Burma. This style is very uncommon compared to the red wool types most commonly seen on the “ethnographic textile” market. This is a single panel with supplementary weft trim on the ends made of dog hair. Aside from tiny amounts of commercially dyed thread used on the borders as highlights this piece is made of all hand spun treads and natural dyes...
