Stunning flambé glazed jar with predominant pomegranate (ish) outer glaze and azure blue inner glaze. This piece appears to be emulating a Song official Jun ware as it has the typical brown glaze inside the foot found only the “Imperial” pieces, but this shape was never found in this class. Most likely this is from the Shekwan/Shiwan kiln in Guangdong, as they were the masters at reproducing the classic Song glazes, although this piece has the weight and feel of stoneware more than pottery ...click for details

Fine and rare “wedding blanket” from the Zhuang ethnic minority, Guangxi Zhuang or southern Guizhou provinces, with stylized floral design. This textile is made from all hand spun and hand woven cotton and natural dyes. A similar piece is depicted in Hali Magazine issue 165, “Woven Bedcovers of Southwest China’s Minority’s” page # 71 by Eric Boudot, but with a yellow field instead of blue. The inconsistencies (which in my opinion are intentional) in the indigo dyed threads give this pi ...click for details

Fine and rare vintage panel from a Guizhou, Tujia minority wedding blanket with butterfly and lotus scroll motifs (please note that this type of lotus scrolling is an adaptation/interpretation of Ming blue and white ceramics). This piece is composed of all handspun silk floss weft embroidery and cotton thread fibers. The process for weaving in the alternating black and white threads on the face of the textile is quite complex, as may be observed in enlargements. Excellent condition, circ ...click for details

Fine and rare five paneled skirt, from the Meifu subgroup of the Li people Hainan Island, circa mid 20th century. This kind of ikat textile is unique among Chinese minority groups. The top panel on this appears to be recent as it is composed of brighter colored commercial cotton thread, bear in mind that hand weaving commercial thread is more difficult than handspun given that its is finer. The rest of the skirt (circa 1950/1960) is hand spun cotton and indigo with abstract human and anim ...click for details

Rare two paneled wedding blanket with stylized confronted birds and flowers (ref. Hali Magazine, issue, 155, pg 67, Eric Boudot, Chinese Minorities Textiles) from the Dai minority, Dehong, Yunnan, China. The Dai are members of the greater ethnic group usually referred as Shan, the majority of who live in the Burma, Shan State. This type of textile however is unique only to the Daizu and is composed of all natural dyes and hand spun cotton, with the exception of some the brown warp threads whic ...click for details

Fine and rare five paneled skirt, from the Meifu subgroup of the Li people Hainan Island, circa mid 20th century. These kinds of textiles are unique among Chinese minority weavings as they combine supplementary weft brocade and tie dye ikat techniques. The colored threads in the brocaded panel are a combination of cotton, and polyester while the rest of the skirt is hand spun cotton and indigo in an abstract and zoomorphic design- pulled apart at the seam on top, no rips or holes. Unusual mask from a Yunnan ethnic minority, possibly Qiang, Hani or Naxi. This piece is quite unique as it is carved from the end culm of a bamboo shoot, a material which I have never seen before for this sort of thing. Nuo rituals amongst the ethnic groups from this region are of an animist and shamanistic nature, I can’t add much more to it than that since the significance is usually specific to a particular shaman or village. This piece is circa 20 - 30 years old and is an authentic ritua ...click for details
