Fine and rare “wedding blanket” from the Zhuang ethnic minority, Guangxi Zhuang or southern Guizhou provinces, with stylized floral design. This textile is made from all hand spun and hand woven cotton and natural dyes. A similar piece is depicted in Hali Magazine issue 165, “Woven Bedcovers of Southwest China’s Minority’s” page # 71 by Eric Boudot, but with a yellow field instead of blue. The inconsistencies (which in my opinion are intentional) in the indigo dyed threads give this pi ...click for details

Fine and rare vintage panel from a Guizhou, Tujia minority wedding blanket with butterfly and lotus scroll motifs (please note that this type of lotus scrolling is an adaptation/interpretation of Ming blue and white ceramics). This piece is composed of all handspun silk floss weft embroidery and cotton thread fibers. The process for weaving in the alternating black and white threads on the face of the textile is quite complex, as may be observed in enlargements. Excellent condition, circ ...click for details

Fine and rare five paneled skirt, from the Meifu subgroup of the Li people Hainan Island, circa mid 20th century. This kind of ikat textile is unique among Chinese minority groups. The top panel on this appears to be recent as it is composed of brighter colored commercial cotton thread, bear in mind that hand weaving commercial thread is more difficult than handspun given that its is finer. The rest of the skirt (circa 1950/1960) is hand spun cotton and indigo with abstract human and anim ...click for details

Fine Zhuang minority textile from Guangxi Zhuang/Guizhou province. Woven in two panels with silk embroidered “diamond and star” patterned border. There is a small repair noted in enlargements, minor fading at the bottom and a few minor holes- all consistent with an old piece, some orange and brighter purple silk thread seem to be a later embellishment, indicating that this piece has been handed down several generations and highlights the well toned abrash of the original pattern. Beautiful Miao woman’s apron with black calendered cotton cloth, and green commercial (possibly polyester) border, and fine silk embroidered center panel with hand woven silk embellished apron ties, from Guizhou. The colors in center panel are particularly luscious and I would date this piece 30 to 50 years of age. W: 40cm/15.8in and L: 43cm/17in.
