Fine and rare Naga basket with ceremonial tail; these were used for carrying sharpened “panji” sticks, which were stuck in the ground to impede an enemy’s progress. Perfect condition made from all naturally produced handmade materials.
The basket is woven from bamboo strips, the fringe of the tail is made of hair from a horse’s mane, and the carrying belt is composed of a plant fiber rope and possibly pandanus/palm fiber. It’s difficult to date this piece as it has a nice aged patina b ...click for details

Fine and rare old rattan basket from the Idu Mishmi ethnic group from Arunachal Pradesh, India. In India they are primarily animist but in China where they are known as the Lhoba have strong spiritual affiliations with Tibetan Buddhism, also it should be pointed out that the men are the principle basket weavers, while the women do the textiles. Google “Bamboo and Cane Culture of Arunchal Pradesh” and you will get a good description of this regional craft. As Sino/Arunacha ...click for details

Luscious all hand spun and woven with gold threads, panel from a vintage Varanasi, Indian wedding sari, circa 60 to 70 years old. I would describe the colors as pigeon blood ruby red with subtle gentian floral scrolls intermingled with the gold thread medallions, which I might add is made of genuine low karat gold metal. This is double backed on cotton and silk with a “raw” silk border and polyester end trims. There are a few threadbare areas but with the silk backing they are ...click for details

Lovely old traditional Bhutanese woman’s dress circa 50 years plus. This is a very refined weave with all the narrow stripes being made of silk and the wider bands of having a cotton warp and inner “sechu”silk embellished pattern which gives it a three dimensional feel. The colors are very soft and pastel and most likely natural. One side of the selvedge has some minor fraying which is where it probably dragged the ground and got the most wear as well as few pinholes. The inside of t ...click for details

Absolutely fabulous ( I would only say this if I don’t care if it sells and am happy to keep it for my own collection ) old and rare Angami Naga, three paneled shawl with anthropomorphic cowry shell design, woven by the Meitei of the Manipur State of India and used as a trade/tribute cloth to the Nagas. The exact reason of why these blankets are given to the Naga is a bit obscure. One source says that they are given by a Meitei Raja to a Naga chief for services rendered but as to what ...click for details

Good Angami Naga men’s blanket (body wrap) from India with unusual brown natural color. It is stitched together in 4 panels. The red and black side bands are woven with a silk warp which is quite rare for one of these pieces. Authentic old Naga tribal textile circa 40 to 60 years old, with a few very small holes. The bottom is finished with silk tassels and green embroidery. L: 170cm/67in and W: 103cm/40.5in.
