Exceptionally fine and rare Jinghpaw (aka Jingpo in China) “pukhang” heirloom wrap around skirt from Burma’s northern most state of Kachin. This piece is woven in three panels from two ply handspun cotton thread and goat or dog hair yarn supplementary weft pattern. As I am assuming that goat hair has similar smell to sheep’s wool when wet, so most likely this is dog. This piece is intricately composed and tightly woven lacking the garish colors of a recent piece. The aniline pink dyes ar ...click for details

Fine old Burmese red lacquerware bowl with quatrefoil “ku-nan-kan-yat” motif which is one of oldest and more common designs, according to Sylvia Fraser Liu: Burmese Lacquerware. This one dates to circa 1950 to 1960; there are some cracks in the lacquer which is one of the few reliable determining any significant age besides minute detailing in the design. Unless a piece of lacquer is hermetically sealed, it will crack even if it is not used due to oxidation caused by exposure to air and ...click for details

Quirky big round ball of green glass; possibly sand cast, this would have been used to carve a Buddha image, from Northern Thailand. In the 1950s the Japanese started exporting mold cast glass images to Thailand and Laos so this practice died out around then. There is a Buddha in there waiting to be realized, otherwise it looks nice on the windowsill, especially when the sun shines through it. Weight 210grams D: 5.5cm/2.2in.

Fine woman’s full length, three paneled tube sarong from Ende, Flores Island, Indonesia. This has been my possession since 1988 when I made a trip through Indonesia to study their arts and crafts, it was old when I bought and has remained in storage since then so I reckon this piece is at least 60 years old, possibly more. Although not as well known as Sumbanese and Ibanic ikat, the intricacy of the pattern and fine quality of the weave are more abstract and far superior. I had the good ...click for details

Nice old three paneled “tube” sarong from West Timor, made from all natural dyes, hand spun coarse cotton thread and hand-woven. This piece is 40 to 50 years old and would have been worn from the feet to beneath the shoulder. The center panel pattern has been woven into the cloth with the warp thread forming the design while the border panel motifs are embroidered. L: 146cm/57in and W: 109cm/42in. (could do with washing to brighten up the white color).

Unusual “talking head” from the Yao (aka Mien) ethnic minority, Northern Thailand, this piece was not meant to be part of a complete body. As far as I know the Yao do not have a tradition of puppetry so I am guessing this was probably a toy carved to amuse the kids, never seen anything like this before. Very well carved with an expressive face. Both the lower jar and upper face articulate by pulling the strings, obvious cracks, on the side approximately 40 or 50 years old, H: 16cm/6.2in
