Fine old Burmese red lacquerware bowl with quatrefoil “ku-nan-kan-yat” motif which is one of oldest and more common designs, according to Sylvia Fraser Liu: Burmese Lacquerware. This one dates to circa 1950 to 1960; there are some cracks in the lacquer which is one of the few reliable determining any significant age besides minute detailing in the design. Unless a piece of lacquer is hermetically sealed, it will crack even if it is not used due to oxidation caused by exposure to air and ...click for details

Very fine Lanna Thai Buddhist reading implement (analogous to a Yad Torah Pointer). Used to mark pages and point out words while reciting a sutra from a typical Buddhist text, i.e. individual pages sandwiched between two small wooden planks, although the use of these are confined to Northern Thai Lanna Buddhist books only. Oldish, piece circa 50 years appears to have been relacquered. Perfect condition, comes with custom made metal stand. I have a few of these and this one is t ...click for details

Exceptionally fine and rare Khmer black lacquer “pillow box” with an abstract floral pattern. Definitely an old pre Khmer Rouge piece, dating 40 to 50 years old, possibly more. The unique decoration makes this a one of a kind piece, the construction is typically Cambodian in that it is constructed with thin small planks of wood and is coated with raw lacquer on the bottom, not to mention this was actually purchased several years ago in Cambodia, the attention to detail on the design is ...click for details

Fine old Burmese lacquer box with a sieve insert lid, this piece is most likely from the Shan State and was used as a food receptacle, as the small holes would keep the bugs out. Circa 30 to 50 years old, it is very thin and lightweight and the body is constructed of woven bamboo. Excellent original condition with minor lacquer loss at the bottom’s edge as to be expected from a genuinely old piece, unlike so many brand new or heavily restored Burmese lacquer pieces being offered as 1 ...click for details

Fine and old Burmese lacquer betel box with black, red and green pan-bwa motif and “dancing monkey” figures. From personal experience (I have been traveling to Burma and it’s lacquer workshops since 1986), I can say all genuinely old Burmese lacquer items will show signs of ware such as cracks on the lacquer surface and chipping along the edged rims, as they were used on a daily basis in everyday life, pristine old lacquer pieces with no signs of use are as rare as, authentic Rembrandts.
