Two rare Burmese/Shan small betel containers, 60 to 100 years old with “ku-nan kan byat” patterns and original inner trays. Genuine antique Burmese lacquer is almost impossible to find these days; I picked the larger one up in a small shop Luang Prabang, Laos in 1998. H: 8.7cm/3.4in and W: 10.2cm/4in, and the smaller one, H: 6.7cm/2.7in and D: 7.7cm/3in, in Chiang Mai this year. These have some old repairs, as well as a pleasing craclature typical of antique Burmese lacquer.

Nice old red and black lacquered Cambodian Siri (betel) box container with foliate scroll pattern incised on the surface. Minor lacquer losses and restoration consistent with an antique piece. The art of Cambodian lacquer production has had a minor renaissance in recent years but this mainly done for the decorative art export market, items made for local village use this has pretty much died out after Khmer Rouge Era and advent of cheap Chinese plastic boxes. D: 23.5cm/9.2in and H: 10...

Charming old small black and red lacquer vessel from Kenteng, Shan State, Burma. A very cute piece and genuinely old- circa 50 to 80 years. This piece is quite unusual in that it has six feet instead of the usual four. There is some surface craclature as to be expected from authentic old lacquer but no breakage in the body. D: 13.5cm/5.3in and H: 8.2cm/3.2in.

Fine old Shan Burmese lacquer box, circa early 20th century with one tray and depicting monkeys playing in foliate background. This piece is a real classic beauty (IMHO). There are a couple of repairs at the edge of the rim noted in enlargements as well as craclature on the surface and nicks around the foot. H: 19.2cm/7.6in and D: 22cm/8in. Please note I put a grain of rice in the last enlargement to highlight the finely detailed work.

Nice antique Thai lacquered basket box with classic wide scrolling Lanna foliate pattern. Both ends of the top have old repairs using traditional materials. This piece is between 60 and 80 years old, which is itself quite rare as there are very few pieces of old Lanna lacquer left in Thailand these days. L: 19cm/7.5in, W: 10.5cm/4.in and H: 6cm/2.4in.

Very old (over 50 years) which is ancient by Burmese lacquer standards. This was possibly made by the Shan who favored dramatic geometric designs over the more figural Burman style. This has some fritting on the lacquer. H: 24cm/9.5in D: 18cm/7.1in.

Rare black Lanna lacquer box circa 60 to 80 years old in excellent condition given its age, no repairs or big chunk missing, from Chiang Mai. Genuine old examples of Thai lacquer are quite rare these days as most have been bought up by Thai collectors. H: 8.7cm/3.4in and D: 11cm/4.2in.

Nice old antique black lacquered bamboo and wood box from Cambodia circa early 20th century. This part of a collection I acquired almost 20 years ago. Khmer lacquer is quite rare, not many crafts survived the Khmer Rouge era, and is a lost art. Some wear as to be expected but no major damage. D: 5cm/7.8in

Rare early 20th century Bai minority lacquered box constructed from leather. I purchased this piece in a Bai minority, weekly market in Yunnan near Dali around 2002. I have found many references to Bai lacquer but never any pictures or other documentation other than they grow the tree from which lacquer was made. One can assume this craft is no longer being done with the availability of cheap plastic items as well as the migration of artisans to better paying jobs in the city. Excell...

Exceptionally rare lacquer box from the Kachin ethnic group, Myanmar- a very old piece circa 100 years old, and one of only three I have ever seen. I acquired this piece about 15 years ago in Pagan. Nothing is documented (that I can find) on Kachin lacquer making although Sylvia Fraser-Lu, probably one of the world’s most well known Western expert on Burmese lacquer, mention’s that the best raw lacquer comes from the Kachin State. The lightly carved detail at the base is ...

Rare complete lacquer tobacco box with trays from the Karen hilltribe ethnic group Northern Thailand. Next to nothing has written about this craft amongst the Karen people although they are known for their water tight baskets using lacquer to seal the weave. H: 9.5cm/3.8in and D: 8.6cm/3.3in.

Genuine antique Shan lacquer box circa late 19thCE. Most Burmese lacquer being offered on the internet purported to be antique are vintage at best and new at worst. I acquired this in Yunnan, China along the Burmese border but of Shan (nationality in China). Although there is some damage the craftsmanship is exquisite which is why I put a grain of sand in a couple of the images to put the work into perspective. Personally I prefer Shan lacquer more than Burmese because the designs tend to...

Fine and rare pair of molded leather tobacco boxes from the Bai ethnic group in Yunnan, China. These are covered in black lacquer showing quite sophisticated craftsmanship on par with the Dai/Shan peolple who are acknowledged to be the best in this region, and date circa mid 20th century. These were purchased in a rural Yunnan Bai market, near Dali several years ago. I have found many references to Bai lacquer but never any pictures or other documentation other than they grow the tree from ...

Very rare “letter” purse woven from bamboo from the Karen ethnic group along the Thai/Burma border. Before the advent of plastic bags and Velcro items such as these were treasured labor intensive daily necessities. This is a semi antique- circa 60 to 80 years old made from all natural materials and is designed to make it as waterproof as possible. There are still traces of red lacquer in the crevices indicating that this was the original overcoat and the corners are reinforced with leat...

Fine old Cambodian lacquered woven bamboo betel box. No damage or restoration other than natural wear, as to be expected. Any lacquer coming from Southeast Asia with no signs of use is a strong indicator that its new. Circa 60 to 90 years old. D: 21.5cm/8.5in and H: 9cm/3.5in

Exceptionally fine and rare Khmer black lacquer “pillow box” with an abstract floral pattern. Definitely an old pre Khmer Rouge piece, dating 40 to 50 years old, possibly more. The unique decoration makes this a one of a kind piece, the construction is typically Cambodian in that it is constructed with thin small planks of wood and is coated with raw lacquer on the bottom, not to mention this was actually purchased several years ago in Cambodia, the attention to detail on the design i...
