Good Tang Dynasty gray clay brick depicting “Atlas” type figure seated on a lotus blossom I was in Taxila once and saw similar figures which to my mind illustrates the Greco/Roman influence in Tang art. The lotus shows indicates an obvious Buddhist connection. This is painted with “stucco”, and in good condition with no damage. W: 14.5cm/5.8in and H: 17.7cm/7in.

Unusual stone carving of the Dharmapala- Mahakala manifested as Gugyi Gompo- the protector of the tent. This piece was sourced in Qinghai Province (formerly known as Amdo), China about 20 years ago and is circa 18th to 19th Century, but most likely is of Nepali origin. H: 16cm/6.5in and W: 7.8cm/3.1in (not including stand). There are remnants of a “peg” carved beneath the plinth indicating this was part of a temple ensemble rather then a personal votive image.

Quirky “Sai Sin” thread holder. Sai Sin chord is a type of religious blessing conferred on one usually after you have made a donation to a temple, by a monk. If you have ever been to Thailand and have seen people with bits of string tied around their wrist- this is what it’s about. This came from a Buddhist temple in Northern Thailand and is around 50 or 60 years old. L: 41cm/16in and W: 31cm/12in.

Rare, circa early to mid 20th century carved wooden mask designed to be placed on or above a door to ward off evil spirits, in the animist Taoist tradition. This was made by a minority ethnic group in Southern China (Miao or Tujia) and is similar in style to Nuo masks although this was never meant to be worn. H: 42.5cm/16.8 in and W: 29cm/11.5in. This is a very impressive piece with a fierce demeanor. The nose is damaged, a minor crack and the odd bug hole, here and there.

The head broke from the neck (and subsequently repaired- see enlargements) off revealing a ceramic core and the most of the robe on the left side is missing. One of a kind quirky Thai pangolin amulet carved from bone with Khon script signifying this has some spiritual meaning. I have never seen one these before- possibly used as knife in symbolic blood letting rituals where the shaman cuts out “evil” from his patient. Probably about 30 year old this is a lovely abstract interpretation of a Scaly Anteater. L: 13cm/5.2in.

These are covered with traditional gold and back lacquer and the bodies are made from compressed powdered herbs or temple incense ash. For some rea...
