One of a kind quirky Thai pangolin amulet carved from bone with Khon script signifying this has some spiritual meaning. I have never seen one these before- possibly used as knife in symbolic blood letting rituals where the shaman cuts out “evil” from his patient. Probably about 30 year old this is a lovely abstract interpretation of a Scaly Anteater. L: 13cm/5.2in.

Complete set of five Shan esoteric Buddhist images. These consist of a Buddha, three monks and a chedi. These are covered with traditional gold and back lacquer and the bodies are made from compressed powdered herbs or temple incense ash. They have a quirky abstract quality to them, their facelessness represents that the individual is inconsequential but has the potential for becoming a Buddha, on the bottom are the eight Burmese zodiac symbols based on the days of the week. For some rea...

Lovely, circa 18th century wood statue of the Chinese Goddess of Mercy seated on a lotus leaf and buds. There is one stem broken on the left bud and the backing plug on the consecration niche is missing. This has the original dedication but it is unreadable. Most likely from Southern China it has traces of the original gilt and lacquer. These have become quite scarce these days due to domestic demand in China, this piece was lucky find coming from an Australian collection. H: 24cmcm/...

Quirky “Budai”circa Mid Qing Dynasty, possibly much earlier. This is a high fired pottery molded piece. Stylistically this figure hasn’t changed much since the Song Dynasty so precise dating is difficult. This is an excavated piece and has a similar glaze to Jizhou but without the expected craquelure. Quite possibly this Shekwan piece emulating this. In excellent condition the spot on the nose there is no glaze where it as either been rubbed off or simply never took. H: 12.9cm/...

Alabaster Shan Buddha circa 18th century. This has been left out in the sun and rain for the past 10 years so the surface has begun to degrade (a good lesson in the Buddhist fundamental of Anicca: the impermanence of all things). The head has been reattached. The base is hollow: the only example I have ever seen with this. H: 27cm/10.6in and W: 11cm/4.2in.

Good monkey khik carved from wood, contrary to how I see these often advertised they, have little to do with attracting women, but are worn by on the side by men for luck and prosperity or used by women to ward odd “evil men” and attract money. The symbolism goes way back to Hindu mythology where the Shiva lingam represents primordial creative energy and the Monkey God Hanuman embodies courage and devotion. L: 5cm/2in. Unlike the cast metal types, this is a one off item, hand c...

Exceptionally rare bronze Burmese/Shan musician which would have been part of Buddhist “nativity ensemble”. These consist of dancers, devotees and musicians celebrating his birth with the young Buddha forming the focal point of the group. Usually these types of images are quite crude and small being placed inside chedis/stupas as a form of merit making and were never meant to be displayed on a Buddhist altar. This one however would have been displayed in private home or temple. I purch...

Classic mid 19th century Ningxia Buddhist temple runner with “foo dogs”. L: 234cm/92in and W: 70cm/27.5in. Some wear in center and this piece was shortened at the ends which is very typical for this kind of rug since these would have been originally 20 to 30 feet long. Both ends have about 15cm each rewoven with a near invisible and seamless restoration.
