Total L: 71cm/28in.

Fine and rare molded leather tobacco box from the Bai ethnic group in Yunnan, China. These were purchased in rural Yunnan at a Bai market, near Dali about 15 years ago. I have found a few references on Bai lacquer but never any images, so this may have been made by either the Shan(Dai) or Yi minorities who have a better documented lacquer tradition. One can assume this craft is no longer being done with the availability of cheap plastic items as well as the migration of artisans to b...

Pictorial men’s body cloth from the Naga, in Burma. I acquired this in Mae Sai, along the Thai/Burmese border in the late 90’s. All handspun cotton and mostly natural dyes- the embroidery may be a later add on, the blanket itself is supple and has had some use. This piece was probably made for the tourist market back then but with creative typical Naga designs. There are a few weak areas in the weave but no holes or tears. L: 170cm/66in and W: 107cm/42in.

Good condition given its age- there are some patches...

Men’s tunic from the Chin ethnic group, most likely from the Hakha Township, Chin State, Myanmar. I purchased this in the 1990s and it is not very old- probably made in the 80s or 70s. This is an authentic ceremonial piece worn only on special occasions. I have not seen any more of these during the past 15 odd years of my usual buying trips. This weaving is a vanishing craft and quite possibly no longer being made in the traditional way. The embroidery is single side floating weft whil...
