Men’s tunic from the Chin ethnic group, most likely from the Hakha Township, Chin State, Myanmar. I purchased this in the 1990s and it is not very old- probably made in the 80s or 70s. This is an authentic ceremonial piece worn only on special occasions. I have not seen any more of these during the past 15 odd years of my usual buying trips. This weaving is a vanishing craft and quite possibly no longer being made in the traditional way. The embroidery is single side floating weft while ...

Very rare ceremonial rice cutter from the Karen people (this particular one is from Northern Thailand). This knife would only be used on the first cutting of the season and as with most all of the rice cultivators in Asia there is a great deal of ritual and importance given to this act, regardless of the religion i.e. Buddhist, animist, Hindu etc. The handle has a wonderful original patina and the blade is till quite sharp but the tip is broken. Circa 60 to 100 years old. I am alwa...

One of a kind quirky Thai pangolin amulet carved from bone with Khon script signifying this has some spiritual meaning. Rare collection (5 pieces) of pottery tobacco pipes used by the Rau/Brau people. These were acquired in Laos quite a few years. These were fired at the Yixing Kilns, in Jiangsu Province- the same place that made opium pipe bowls. These would date from late 19th century to first half 20th century- the ones with reddish clay being the oldest. They have some small chips consistent with old tribal pieces. As far as I know these pipes were unique to the Brau, and would today be consid...
