Beautiful women’s skirt from the Bahnar (Ba Na) ethnic group from the Central Highlands of Vietnam, woven from fine handspun cotton using all natural dyes. The weaving is very intricate and refined, note the use of narrow warp ikat bands throughout this piece. This piece is in perfect condition and dates to 1960 to 1970. The center panel is stitched loosely at the top as it was meant to be used as a pocket. Google Bahnar Bob Mc Kerrow to view photos of women wearing this kind o...

Very rare man’s ceremonial tunic from the Chin ethnic group, probably Falam Township, Chin State Myanmar. I would consider this an antique heirloom blanket between 1910-1940 finely woven from hand spun cotton thread and natural dyes. This incorporates the classic Chin diamond twill weft pattern as well as double side embroidery. This still has traces of the original and embroidery portions of the selvedge side are missing (I am guessing approx 15cm/6in) - W: 128cm/50.5in and L; 1...

Very rare complete jacket back panel from the remote Miao Jiupang group from Jiahe County, Guizhou province (see last enlargement). This style of decoration is unique to this group and very difficult to make, as every tiny bit of tin has to be individually cut and crimped. Recently acquired from a private Hong Kong collector, these are the first examples I have send of these I have seen in the past 10 years. Excellent condition This is semi antique circa 50 to 60 years old L: 39cm/15.5i...

One of kind, single supplementary weft embroidered panel, L: 4.63m/14.2ft and W: 36.5cm/13.8in, from the Tujia ethnic group in Guizhou, Southwest China. Its function is a bit of mystery so it being a sling wrap around baby carrier is my best guess. Originally I thought it might be a traditional wedding blanket that would be cut and sewn with three panels together but there is no border pattern woven into this piece as is typical. The pattern is quite unusual in that green is the ...

Exquisite pair of late circa late 19th-early 20th CE loom weft supports carved into the shape of lotus buds with beautiful classic Khmer floral scroll motif and remnants of original red and black lacquer. I bought these in the Russian Market about 14 years ago in Phnom Pehn; a pair of equal quality is housed in the National Museum there. Each is carved from a single piece of wood. They are in very good condition with minor checks and knocks as to be expected from antique wooden implements. H: 26...

Antique portable spinning wheel from Chiang Mai area Northern Thailand. Nice functional old piece with classic Thai carved motifs on the support arms and spokes. This is from a village so it has been repaired as needed over the years using various bits. The handle is missing and the there is some damage to the carving in enlargement 4. This will pack flat (relatively) and is early 20th century. W: 67cm/26.3 and H: 47cm/18.5in

Very rare woman’s tube skirt from Taliang ethnic group in Attapeu province Laos. Please note in the 3rd enlargement is the image of helicopter dating back to the CIA covert “Air America” operation Laos from 1955 to 1974. Similar to the Afghan "war rugs” made during the Soviet occupation, the simpler folk amongst us documented current events in their weavings. I traveled through this province back 2002 and did not find one single piece dating from this period although I di...

Very rare woman’s blanket from the Tiddim speaking, Northern Chin ethnic group who live in the Chin State, Burma next to India. This piece is circa 1950-1960, spun from commercial, hand dyed cotton thread with some single faced supplementary and diamond twill patterns. Please see enlargements to appreciate the complexity of this weave. There are a few small holes but noting egregious- obviously of interest to the specialist collector. L: 164cm/64.5in and W: 101cm/39.8in. See last enl...

Unusual dated woman’s sarong from Burma. This is hand loomed with a dancing girl motif, 1974 date (coincides with the forming of Burma’s 2nd constitution under Ne Win) and traditional Burmese pattern. It appears to be made of a combination of silk and synthetic fiber- the yellow threads are silk while the rest are “something else”. Possibly part of a dance troupe costume for a commemorative performance, interesting piece, the only dated one I have ever seen. There are s...

Fine and rare old Yao/Mien all hand spun and woven cotton wedding veil with silk thread embroidered geometrical design, circa 50 years old. This piece is from Kim Mien group and was originally collected in Northern Laos. The colors on this piece are subtle and restrained (please note the use of shades of brown and blue in enlargements) and the brown and white tassels. Except for a couple of tiny holes this piece is in excellent condition. W: 47cm/18.5in and L: 75cm/29.5in.

Rare antique silk Cambodian ikat lower garment. H: 90cm/35.5in L: 2.1m/7ft10in. with a twill weave; unique among Southeast Asian textiles. This skill died out during the reign of the Khmer Rouge and has not yet recovered the skills and technique to make a textile of this quality. The size of this piece indicates it would have been worn by an upper class family much like a pantaloon with center being passed through the legs and tucked into the waist. This is a very old style and may be ...

Rare semi antique supplementary warp silk embroidery on handspun indigo cotton, blanket from the diverse Tai ethnic group Vietnam/Laos. I collected this in Chiang Mai around 12 years ago and would date it around 40 to 80 years old. Nowadays you just can’t find this sort of textile anymore. Some embroidery losses and a hole along the edge (noted in enlargements) but overall in very good condition. Dimensions: 84cm/33in x 145cm/57in.

Good West Timor men’s mantle using supplementary warp weaving decoration on the side panels and quirky embroidered fanciful animals in the center panel. This piece is late 20th century and is woven with homespun cotton thread. Except for the embroidered pattern the dyes appear to be natural. The colors on this piece are quite toned and mellow compared to what I have seen recently coming from that region. No damage, some light fading may be noted in the reddish areas of the first enlarg...

Fine and rare antique Bouyi, Buyi three paneled wedding blanket with supplementary weft silk embroidered pattern. Except for the purple aniline silk thread the dyes on this piece are natural; the blanket foundation is made of a bast fiber weft (hemp or ramie) and handspun cotton warp. There is some loss to the cream colored silk thread but having said this, it is in excellent condition for late 19th to early 20th century textile from Southern China and thoughtfully woven- please note how ...

Exceptionally fine and rare Jinghpaw (aka Jingpo in China) “pukhang” heirloom wrap around skirt from Burma’s northern most state of Kachin. This piece is woven in three panels from two ply handspun cotton thread and goat or dog hair yarn supplementary weft pattern. As I am assuming that goat hair has similar smell to sheep’s wool when wet, so most likely this is dog. This piece is intricately composed and tightly woven lacking the garish colors of a recent piece. The aniline pink...
