Fine and rare Toraja, Sulawesi seko mandi (funeral shroud) possibly from Seko village. The Torajans have elaborate and often excessive burial rites (depending on the wealth or status) of the deceased and death does not have the grim connotations as it does in the West, the bodies are disinterred once a year washed, dressed and walked around the village. This piece has the classic sekong pattern consisting of interlocking hooks and has been interpreted as interlocking arms welcoming the d...

Exceptionally rare baby blanket from the Tujia weavers of Longshan County, Hunan Province, China. I have been looking for one of these for years and this is the first complete blanket I have ever found, albeit the lower two border panels come from a different piece. This incorporates the unique white tiger motif (see enlargement #3) which is believed to give the baby protection. For the Tujia the white Tiger is a totemic ancestor diety. The central panel has some holes and has unravele...

Rare jacket back panel from the remote Miao Jiupang group from Jiahe County, Guizhou province (see last enlargement), with purple embroidered pattern between the spaces in the tin decoration. This style of decoration is unique to this group and very difficult to make, as every tiny bit of tin has to be individually cut and crimped. Recently acquired from a private Hong Kong collector, these are the first examples I have send of these I have seen in the past 15 years. There ...

Rare antique two paneled bed cover from the Daizu ethnic minority of Southern Yunnan, China. An unusual piece with very fine silk embroidery and woven field with what may be hemp/ramie handspun threads, as it has a slightly coarser and stiff feel than standard cotton thread. I would date this circa 19th century with natural dyes. There are small holes and tears throughout the piece as to be expected in a delicate old textile from a tropical climate. L: 120cm/47in and W: 69cm/27in.

One of kind, single supplementary weft embroidered panel, L: 4.63m/14.2ft and W: 36.5cm/13.8in, from Guizhou, Southwest China. Its function is a bit of mystery so it being a sling wrap around baby carrier or possibly a festival or religious banner. Originally I thought it might be a traditional wedding blanket that would be cut and sewn with three panels together but there is no border pattern woven into this piece as is typical. The pattern is quite unusual in that green is th...

Fine and rare early 20th century Miao baby carrying strap from Zhouxi, Guizhou China. Please note that every diamond shaped medallion pattern is different. Total length of the brocaded panel is 134cm/52in and W: 16cm/6.5in. I had a contemporary “mud cloth...
