~Sold to the U.S., thanks a bunch!~ $700.USD

Folk Buddha from Laos carved from hardwood possibly teak. The expression on his face is sublime. I usually don’t go into subjective hyperbole unless I really mean it. These were carved in rural Laotian communities as a devotional act, rather than to adorn temples or put on an altar. Anyway even with the obvious damage I think in terms of Ethnographic Art this piece is exceptionally fine. Late 19th CE, H: 46cm/18in and W: 15cm/5.9in.

~Sold to Thailand, kpa khun kap!~$320.USD

Very rare and eclectic Yao ‘lingpai’ (literally a ‘decree/order tablet’) and it represents the traditional bamboo tablet (usually with a written demand or report) presented to the emperor in the past. It is used by many ethnic groups in Southern China as well as the Han. During ceremonies (be they Nuo, Yao or Taoist etc.), the priest stands in front of the altar with the ‘lingpai’ held in both hands in front of him and bows to the divinities while chanting incantations. It can also be used to ...click for details

Very fine Ming Dynasty wood Kwan Yin statue from Fujian Province, China. No insect damage and only one minor breakage on lotus bud noted in enlargement #2. This piece has traces of original gold lacquer on stucco and brown lacquer. There is a dedication niche on the back of the image as there is a lacquered over fissure noted in last enlargement. Typically this would have the date and donor’s name written on silk or rice paper along with a few quirky “offerings” inside. Examine the close ...click for details

Exceptionally fine and well detailed votive terra cotta plaque from the Pagan Culture, Burma, 1200-1300CE. This is the only signed piece I have ever seen from this type of artifact. I acquired this along the Northern Thai/Burmese border around 15 years ago, at one time these were quite plentiful but I have not seen any authentic pieces for the past 5 years. H: 9.5cm/ 3.8in and base W: 7cm/2.8in. Reference photo in last enlargement from Ancient Buddhist Art from Burma Tausi Gallery.

Two small bronze image of Annapurna; the Goddess of the hearth and food (as well a whacking big mountain named after her). She sits holding a ladle with which she feeds the world, with an unlimited amount of food. She is an incarnation of Parvati, the wife of Shiva. Annapurna symbolizes the divine aspect of nourishing care. These item predates the 18th century with excellent patina- the smaller one has some holes and tears on the base while the larger one has a broken arm and damage to the b ...click for details

Beautifully detailed image of Bhudevi. On the more mundane level she is the lover along with Shridevi another “consort” of Vishnu who is the Preserver in the Trimurti i.e. three aspects of Godhood. Brahma- God as Creator, Shiva -God as Destroyer are the other two, taken together they represent the cycle of existence. On the spiritual plane Bhudevi also is considered the Shakti of Vishnu which is to say she represents the manifested feminine power of Vishnu. Circa 19CE. Superb condition ...click for details

~Sold to Australia, cheers!~ $300.USD

Very early and rare Lao bronze Buddha circa 13th to 14th CE. The wide lap on this image is typical of post Khmer Buddhas on which the earliest Lao Buddhist art drew inspiration. The face is exceptionally sweet on this piece which in my opinion sets Lao Buddhas apart from other regional styles. The base is missing as well as having some holes in the body (please observe enlargements). In the true Buddhist spirit of equanimity this image exudes a feeling of inner happiness, oblivious to the decay ...click for details

Sri Lankan decorative lintel panel with classic Buddhist Hamsa “sacred goose” and lotus motif, this piece is quite heavy carved from teak (weighs approximately 3.5kg/8lbs) and is pre 1900 possibly earlier. I acquired this from a French collector who resided in Sri Lanka in the 1990s. Please note 4th enlargement to observe the three dimensional quality of this carving. There are traces of paint as well as some patching. L: 74cm/29in and H: 17.5/7in. I might recommend surface shipping as it would b ...click for details

Exquisite finely carved image of Guan Yin, Goddess of Mercy carved from “Eagle Wood”. This is a rare dense tropical wood that is created by damaging the tree at the base and allowing it to be infected by a fungus which gives it very dense and fragrant properties. This carving is very detailed and I would date this circa 1970s and was sourced from an old collection kept in a storage warehouse in Hong Kong. This quality work is no longer being done in China today. She is revered in both Budd ...click for details

This is a rare dense subtropical wood that is created by damaging the tree at the base and allowing it to be infected by a fungus which gives it very dense and fragrant properties. This carving is detailed and the heroic expression is reminiscent of Socialist Realism so I would date this piece to the 1970s and was sourced from an old collection kept in a storage war ...click for details

Exceptionally rare circa 17th/18th CE bronze Buddha image. This piece originally came from a U.S. embassy official based in Burma in 1986, of this I am certain. On a more apocryphal note, it was said to have been found in the Irrawaddy River at the Sagaing Monastery complex, near Mandalay. The base of the Buddha image has been repaired where he sits on top of the pedestal; I have highlighted this in the enlargements 10# and 11# and this appears to have been filled with plaster and covered with “B ...click for details

Sold to Oz- cheers mate!

Eclectic Northern Thai Buddha- this would be classified as a folk image so an accurate dating is a bit difficult, but judging by the wear and patina of the bronze this should date circa 16th/17th CE (at least). I purchased this in the around 1995 at the Bangkok amulet market near Wat Mahatat, from a reputable vendor who said it was Haripunchai, the last Mon Kingdom in Thailand that ended in 13th CE, another knowledgeable collector said it looked Mon to them as well. To me except for the face i ...click for details
