Classic molded stucco head of a circa 12h–13th century Thai Buddha head from the last independent Mon kingdom of Haripunchai in Thailand (what is now Lamphun). This piece has been excavated with a bit of expected deterioration to the stucco. I acquired this in the “amulet market” in Chiang Mai about 6 years ago. See last enlargement for reference. Wonderfully carved wooden Lanna Thai animal, the hole in the mouth and lightly incised symbol underneath the base indicate this was meant to be a “lucky charm” or fetish of sorts. H: 7.5cm/3in and W: 4.8cm/1.9in.

$750.USD

Exceptionally rare bronze Burmese/Shan musician which would have been part of Buddhist “nativity ensemble”. These consist of dancers, devotees and musicians celebrating his birth with the young Buddha forming the focal point of the group. Usually these types of images are quite crude and small being placed inside chedis/stupas as a form of merit making and were never meant to be displayed on a Buddhist altar. This one however would have been displayed in private home or temple. I pur ...click for details

$130.USD

Rare tiger image carved from black coral; this has some Thai Khon script lightly incised on the surface indicating that this has some sort of “protective” power and is a fetish or amulet. The material is quite light in weight and has been lacquered with a patch of gold leaf applied-probably not more than 40 or 50 years old. H: 6.3cm/2.5in and W: 4.8cm/1.8in.

Two fragments of a jade ornament, circa Tang or Liao Dynasties, of a Buddhist celestial being. Obviously these pieces have a lot of calcification but would make good study pieces for a serious jade collector. The workmanship is impossibly minute and fine on these, although it is difficult to tell from the photos, it is well contoured with a good three dimensional quality. See last enlargement for scale.

$80.USD

Good monkey khik carved from wood, contrary to how I see these often advertised they have little to do with attracting women, but are worn by on the side by men for luck and prosperity. The symbolism goes way back to Hindu mythology where the Shiva lingam represents primordial creative energy and the Monkey God Hanuman embodies courage and devotion. L: 5cm/2in. Unlike the cast metal types, this is a one off item and good example of Thai folk art.

Exceptionally rare amber sancai glazed Liao (907 CE – 1125 CE) tomb guardian (zhenmu shou). The Liao were a non Han, Buddhist culture contemporary to Five Dynasties and Northern Song, but assimilated the Chinese burial custom of building mortuary chambers with wall murals that show its origins in Tang culture and internment of precious goods. Liao funeral statues are very rare, I can find one published example of an unglazed pottery attendant (“Artistic Legacy of the Qidan” Art Mus ...click for details
