$700.USD

Rare and well sculpted marble torso of Buddha seated in the Bhadra asana from the Tang Dynasty. This is a classic piece which clearly illustrates the Gandharan Greek inspired influence on early Chinese Buddhist art. The head and lower portion of base were not original on this piece so were removed by the previous owner. Included is a custom made stand. H: 13.7cm/5.4in and W: 11.2cm/4.4in.

Good pair of Tang Dynasty gray clay bricks depicting “Atlas” type figures seated on lotus flowers. I was in Taxila once and saw similar figures which to my mind illustrate the Greco/Roman influence in Tang art. The lotus shows indicates an obvious Buddhist connection. Both pieces are painted with “stucco” in good condition with no damage. W: 14.5cm/5.8in and H: 17.7cm/7in each.

$1500.USD

Rare classic, late 19th/early 20th century standing Lao/Lanna Buddha with one hand raised in the abhaya dispelling fear gesture. This piece represents a very eclectic regional style with inset stone eyes, “durian” spiky hair and exaggerated hands. The robe and gesture is typically Lao but the ears show a Lanna Thai influence- political borders are meaningless when it comes to Buddhist iconography from the Golden Triangle region. It is carved from a hardwood most likely golden teak an ...click for details

Mysterious bronze handled knife with iron blade from Cambodia. Very quirky “dragon” handled knife with original bronze sheath bindings, this could possibly be a type of early “meed mor” (Thai magic knife), but to be honest I cannot find any references to this design and style although the pommel has an uncanny resemblance to “Knife with Dragon-Headed Handle, Ordos Type, 14th cent” in the Harvard Art Museum- just google this. A Khmer dating seems logical as this came out of Cambodia ...click for details

Very rare Arakanese Jambupati (royal attire) circa 16th/17th CE, some of the tines on crown have broken off and the bas is a bit compressed from being buried. This was heavily encrusted when I first acquired it and I done my best to clean it uo with destroying the integrity of the piece. I got this from a French collector and Buddhist Art specialist in 2008. H: 18.8cm/7.5in and W: 12cm/4.8in.

Fine silk embroidered Qing Dynasty dragon robe fragment. I bought this in the Barkor market in front of the Jokang, Lhasa in 1997 and believe this had been repurposed to be the bottom of a Tanka scroll. Good circa 19th CE bronze Buddha from the Shan people in Burma. I found this in Mae Sai, along the Thai/Burmese border in 1998. The style is rather quirky but the face is typically Shan with Burmese gold and black lacquer. There are a few chips to the lacquer otherwise perfect condition. H: 14.7cm/5.9in and W: 5.7cm/2.3in.

Terra Cotta Buddha head and torso from Tov Aimag, Northern Mongolia. This region had an abundance Yellow Hat sect Tibetan temples, most of which were demolished when it became the world’s second Communist country in 1924. Soon after a mass Soviet style pogrom of the Buddhist monastic order was carried out. Taking a page from Uncle Joe's book the Chinese did much the same to the monasteries in Tibet during the Cultural Revolution. This piece is circa 18th CE, I acquired a box of sha ...click for details

~Sold to the U.S., thanks a bunch!~ $700.USD

Folk Buddha from Laos carved from hardwood possibly teak. The expression on his face is sublime. I usually don’t go into subjective hyperbole unless I really mean it. These were carved in rural Laotian communities as a devotional act, rather than to adorn temples or put on an altar. Anyway even with the obvious damage I think in terms of Ethnographic Art this piece is exceptionally fine. Late 19th CE, H: 46cm/18in and W: 15cm/5.9in.
