Find, old Burmese lacquer betel box with black red and green pan-bwa motif and “dancing monkey” figures. From personal experience (I have been traveling to Burma and it’s lacquer workshops since 1986), I can say all genuinely old Burmese lacquer items will show signs of ware such as cracks and chipping along the edged rims as they were used on a daily basis in everyday life, pristine old lacquer pieces with no signs of use are as rare as, authentic Rembrandts. Having said this, the modern Bu ...click for details

Fine and rare pair of molded leather tobacco boxes from the Bai ethnic group in Yunnan, China. These are covered in black lacquer showing quite sophisticated craftsmanship on par with the Dai/Shan peolple who are acknowledged to be the best in this region, and date circa mid 20th century. These were purchased in a rural Yunnan Bai market, near Dali several years ago. I have found many references to Bai lacquer but never any pictures or other documentation other than they grow the tree from ...click for details

Very rare “letter” purse woven from bamboo from the Karen ethnic group along the Thai/Burma border. Before the advent of plastic bags and Velcro items such as these were treasured labor intensive daily necessities. This is a semi antique- circa 60 to 80 years old made from all natural materials and is designed to make it as waterproof as possible. There are still traces of red lacquer in the crevices indicating that this was the original overcoat and the corners are reinforced with leather ...click for details

Complete set of five Shan Buddhist images comprised of a Buddha three monks and a chedi. These are covered with traditional gold and back lacquer and the bodies are made from compressed powdered herbs or temple incense ash. These have a quirky abstract quality to them, their facelessness represents that the individual is inconsequential but has the potential for becoming a Buddha, on the bottom are the eight Burmese zodiac symbols based on the days of the week. For some reason the Wednesday ...click for details

Very rare collection of three circa Warring States/Han Dynasty high fired gray ceramic vessels with substantial traces of lacquer. Aside from a few chips on the mouthrims of the jar and one bowl the ceramics are solid and nice pieces in and off themselves. The lacquer is unstable but plainly visible, possibly some sort of artist’s fixative will prevent further deterioration. Please note second enlargement scale is metric.

Fine old Burmese red lacquerware bowl with quatrefoil “ku-nan-kan-yat” motif which is one of oldest and more common designs, according to Sylvia Fraser Liu: Burmese Lacquerware. This one dates to circa 1950 to 1960; there are some cracks in the lacquer which is one of the few reliable determining any significant age besides minute detailing in the design. Unless a piece of lacquer is hermetically sealed, it will crack even if it is not used due to oxidation caused by exposure to air and ...click for details

Exceptionally fine and rare Khmer black lacquer “pillow box” with an abstract floral pattern. Definitely an old pre Khmer Rouge piece, dating 40 to 50 years old, possibly more. The unique decoration makes this a one of a kind piece, the construction is typically Cambodian in that it is constructed with thin small planks of wood and is coated with raw lacquer on the bottom, not to mention this was actually purchased several years ago in Cambodia, the attention to detail on the design is ...click for details

Finely made Cambodian red and black lacquered oval box, this is post Khmer Rouge i.e. made after 1979 and would probably best described as Arts and Crafts for the tourist market, usually sold as “antique’ after being artificially stressed. Unfortunately for the exception of textiles most traditional Khmer crafts have died out, as the availability of cheap plastic replacements from China and the average Cambodian citizen would not be able to afford items like this. There is nothing I ...click for details

Rare circa early 20th century Bai minority lacquered box constructed from leather. I purchased this piece in a Bai minority, weekly market in Yunnan a few years ago. I have found many references to Bai lacquer but never any pictures or other documentation other than they grow the tree from which lacquer was made. One can assume this craft is no longer being done with the availability of cheap plastic items as well as the migration of artisans to better paying jobs in the city. Excellent ...click for details

Rare and authentic antique Burmese Shan late 19th betel box. This piece is sold unapologetically “as is”, and would make an ideal “anatomical” study piece for anyone with a genuine interest in the art of Burmese lacquer making. Please note: I have put a single grain of rice (long grain) in some of the enlargements for perspective to appreciate the fine craftsmanship that went into making such a simple piece. The two halves fit into one another with same precision as a piston and cyl ...click for details
