Ensemble of old beads from Tibet. The carnelian and two rounded agates came off an old malla (strand of prayer beads), I picked up in front of The Jokang in Lhasa, many years ago and the large banded agate came from a private collection (ex Peter Francis bead researcher), and I forgot where I picked up the turquoise bead from. These are all over 100 years old probably much older. Scale in enlargements.

Good twelve striped etched carnelian bead from the Pyu culture circa 300 CE to 700 CE. Describing this as a “military” bead is fairly apocryphal but seems to be the widely accepted term in bead collecting circles, and are said to indicate some sort of rank. This type of bead is well documented, Early Landscapes of Myanmar: Elizabeth Moore and Arts of Asia-Eyes on the Past and Samon and Pyu Beads in Myanmar: Elizabeth Moore and Terence Tam, vol. 38, #1, which suggests enough, the chemicals used ...click for details

Fine and rare greenstone (most likely serpentine) cylindrical bead from Yunnan. Long tube like beads was a consistent burial artifact in Southeast Asian Bronze Age societies. The Dian culture was contemporary with the Warring States and Han Dynasties of China whose influence may be seen Dong Song bronze drums. This bead is slightly tapered and with an unusually large hole, consistent with an ancient artifact. L 10.3cm/4.1in. Fine and rare circa 6th CE slightly tapered cylindrical Cambodian agate bead. I acquired this about 10 years ago in Thailand, originally this was said to be from Cambodia and pre Khmer. I was perusing a book recently, which has a photo of this type of bead- Khmer Gold: Gifts for the Gods: Emma Bunker and Douglas Lateford, which places this as pre 6th century which would make it either Chenla or Funan Kingdoms, and excavated in Banteay Meanchy Province, Cambodia, which backs this up. Nice strand of Kushan/Bactrian of mixed stone (mostly carnelian) beads. I acquired these along with coins dating from 1st- 4th CE from the same site in North West Pakistan, so these can be dated no later than 1500 years old. There are a few agate and quartzite beads in the lot, some with traces of “etching”. The crescent shaped beads would have originally small ringed shaped ornaments that have been drilled and “knapped” to some extent to accommodate them being strung. Please note that the s ...click for details
