$150.USD

Nice collection of six old silk embroidered pictorial panels. These would date from late Qing to Republic Period 1890-1930, and were probably originally sold by the Friendship Store or Yue Hwa China Products Store about 30 years ago. The borders are machine made vintage but the embroidery is all hand done. There is a small tear on one noted in enlargement 6#, (actually very difficult to see and if lying flat almost invisible). Please examine enlargements for scale and condition, ...click for details

~Sold to the U.K., cheers!~ $160.USD

Very fine silk embroidered purse depicting Liu Hai and the Four Arts symbols (Weiqi, Guqin, Calligraphy and Painting), skills in which “gentlemen” were expected to excel at, so most likely this would have been worn by a man. L: 18cm/7in and W: 12.5cm/5in.

Very rare complete jacket back panel from the remote Miao Jiupang group from Jiahe County, Guizhou province (see last enlargement). This style of decoration is unique to this group and very difficult to make, as every tiny bit of tin has to be individually cut and crimped. Recently acquired from a private Hong Kong collector, these are the first examples I have send of these I have seen in the past 10 years. Excellent condition This is semi antique circa 50 to 60 years old L: 39cm/15.5i ...click for details

~Sold to Japan, domo arigato!~ $750.USD

Lovely old traditional Bhutanese woman’s dress, approximately 70/80 years old. This has a very refined weave with all the narrow stripes being made of silk and the wider bands of having a cotton warp and inner “sechu” silk embellished pattern which gives it a three dimensional feel. The colors are very soft and pastel and most likely natural. The bottom where it would have been dragged along the ground while being worn has minor fraying, there are also a few pinholes here and there b ...click for details

$220.USD

Antique portable spinning wheel from Chiang Mai area Northern Thailand. Nice functional old piece with classic Thai carved motifs on the support arms and spokes. This is from a village so it has been repaired as needed over the years using various bits. The handle is missing and the there is some damage to the carving in enlargement 4. This will pack flat (relatively) and is early 20th century. W: 67cm/26.3 and H: 47cm/18.5in

~Sold to the U.S., thanks a bunch!~ $180.USD

Two complete Nazca “bolseros”- coca leaf pouches and one Tiawanaku double headed serpent textile fragment. The colors are still quite vivid on all three pieces- I would put the condition as “good” given the age of these pieces (please see enlargements for scale and detail). This genre is not my usual milieu but I was passing through the Nazca plains back in 1990 and picked these up there.

$175.USD

Good West Timor men’s mantle using supplementary warp weaving decoration on the side panels and quirky embroidered fanciful animals in the center panel. This piece is late 20th century and is woven with homespun cotton thread. Except for the embroidered pattern the dyes appear to be natural. The colors on this piece are quite toned and mellow compared to what I have seen recently coming from that region. No damage, some light fading may be noted in the reddish areas of the first enlargem ...click for details

$500.USD

Exceptionally fine and rare Jinghpaw (aka Jingpo in China) “pukhang” heirloom wrap around skirt from Burma’s northern most state of Kachin. This piece is woven in three panels from two ply handspun cotton thread and goat or dog hair yarn supplementary weft pattern. As I am assuming that goat hair has similar smell to sheep’s wool when wet, so most likely this is dog. This piece is intricately composed and tightly woven lacking the garish colors of a recent piece. The aniline pink dyes ar ...click for details

Fine and rare vintage panel from a Guizhou, Tujia minority wedding blanket with butterfly and lotus scroll motifs (please note that this type of lotus scrolling is an adaptation/interpretation of Ming blue and white ceramics). This piece is composed of all handspun silk floss weft embroidery and cotton thread fibers. The process for weaving in the alternating black and white threads on the face of the textile is quite complex, as may be observed in enlargements. Excellent condition, circ ...click for details

$800.USD

Rare antique two paneled bed cover from the Daizu ethnic minority of Southern Yunnan, China. An unusual piece with very fine silk embroidery and woven with what may be hemp/ramie handspun threads, as it has a slightly rougher feel than standard cotton thread. I would date this early 20th century with mostly natural dyes. There are small holes and tears throughout the piece as to be expected from an old textile from a tropical climate. L: 120cm/47in and W: 69cm/27in.

$900.USD

Fine and rare five paneled skirt, from the Meifu subgroup of the Li people Hainan Island, circa mid 20th century. This kind of ikat textile is unique among Chinese minority groups. The top panel on this appears to be recent as it is composed of brighter colored commercial cotton thread, bear in mind that hand weaving commercial thread is more difficult than handspun given that its is finer. The rest of the skirt (circa 1950/1960) is hand spun cotton and indigo with abstract human and anim ...click for details
