Exceptionally fine and rare Jinghpaw (aka Jingpo in China) “pukhang” heirloom wrap around skirt from Burma’s northern most state of Kachin. This piece is woven in three panels from two ply handspun cotton thread and goat or dog hair yarn supplementary weft pattern. As I am assuming that goat hair has similar smell to sheep’s wool when wet, so most likely this is dog. This piece is intricately composed and tightly woven lacking the garish colors of a recent piece. The aniline pink dyes ar ...click for details

Fine and rare vintage panel from a Guizhou, Tujia minority wedding blanket with butterfly and lotus scroll motifs (please note that this type of lotus scrolling is an adaptation/interpretation of Ming blue and white ceramics). This piece is composed of all handspun silk floss weft embroidery and cotton thread fibers. The process for weaving in the alternating black and white threads on the face of the textile is quite complex, as may be observed in enlargements. Excellent condition, circ ...click for details

Rare antique two paneled bed cover from the Daizu ethnic minority of Southern Yunnan, China. An unusual piece with very fine silk embroidery and woven with what may be hemp/ramie handspun threads, as it has a slightly rougher feel than standard cotton thread. I would date this early 20th century with mostly natural dyes. There are small holes and tears throughout the piece as to be expected from an old textile from a tropical climate. L: 120cm/47in and W: 69cm/27in.

Fine and rare five paneled skirt, from the Meifu subgroup of the Li people Hainan Island, circa mid 20th century. This kind of ikat textile is unique among Chinese minority groups. The top panel on this appears to be recent as it is composed of brighter colored commercial cotton thread, bear in mind that hand weaving commercial thread is more difficult than handspun given that its is finer. The rest of the skirt (circa 1950/1960) is hand spun cotton and indigo with abstract human and anim ...click for details

Rare two paneled wedding blanket with stylized confronted birds and flowers (ref. The Dai are members of the greater ethnic group usually referred as Shan, the majority of who live in the Burma, Shan State. This type of textile however is unique only to the Daizu and is composed of all natural dyes and hand spun cotton, with the exception of some the brown warp threads whic ...click for details

Fine and rare five paneled skirt, from the Meifu subgroup of the Li people Hainan Island, circa mid 20th century. These kinds of textiles are unique among Chinese minority weavings as they combine supplementary weft brocade and tie dye ikat techniques. The colored threads in the brocaded panel are a combination of cotton, and polyester while the rest of the skirt is hand spun cotton and indigo in an abstract and zoomorphic design- pulled apart at the seam on top, no rips or holes. Nice old three paneled “tube” sarong from West Timor, made from all natural dyes, hand spun coarse cotton thread and hand-woven. This piece is 40 to 50 years old and would have been worn from the feet to beneath the shoulder. The center panel pattern has been woven into the cloth with the warp thread forming the design while the border panel motifs are embroidered. L: 146cm/57in and W: 109cm/42in. (could do with washing to brighten up the white color).

Fine and rare old hand spun and woven cotton textile from Luang Prabang, Laos with indigo tiger and monkey motif and key fret side borders. Comparing the dyes (note the well toned silk threads in last enlargement) to other dated Vietnam War era pieces, I saw during a recent visit, I would put this piece to at least 60 years or older. Excellent condition and mounted on a contemporary handwoven cotton backing and border. L: 128cm/51in and H: 56cm/22in (mounted dimensions 88cm/35in x ...click for details

Eclectic ensemble of five poplar wood print blocks for cloth from Xinjiang Province. As the majority of people of Xinjiang are Muslim Uighur, Turkic speakers- the patterns reflect a Central Asian identity rather than Han. These would have been used by hand as evidenced by the well worn polished grips on the sides of some of the pieces. These are circa 19th century, a couple being possibly older, bordered by the Gobi Desert to the north with rest of the province encompassing the Tak ...click for details

Beautiful Miao woman’s apron with black calendered cotton cloth, and green commercial (possibly polyester) border, and fine silk embroidered center panel with hand woven silk embellished apron ties, from Guizhou.
