description: Very old textile from the Li people from Hainan Island, China. This is a child’s vest and the anthro/zoomorphic cloth might have originally made from another clothing item and then the remnants were reworked into this child’s vest as it wore out. The entire pattern has been embroidered on a handspun and hand-woven cotton clothe with handspun silk thread. This is a genuine museum piece. The liner is made of a newer handspun and hand woven cotton cloth and has another lining of unknown cloth between these two. This textile is at least early twentieth century and could well be as early as the 19th. I have seen a similar pattern on older Li women’s skirts but never anything with such detail and in such a broad size. There are a few repairs but not very noticeable. This definitely a piece for a specialist collector or someone who wants to own a one of a kind item of old hill tribe textile. 39.2cm/15.4in front length x 32.5/12.8in buttoned front width.
