| Fine Hetian nephrite jade animal carving in the form of toad hiding beneath a leaf. In Chinese traditional philosophy this represents that even a humble toad when croaking beneath a leaf will make itself heard, (the leaf amplifying his voice). In context this was meant in terms of after a student passes his exams that he can make his virtues known. Early to mid 20th century the carving incorporates the original natural brown “skin” for the leaf. There is one chip on the leaf above the head noted in enlargement #2. L: 4cm. | ||||||||
