Rare high fired gray, hand sculpted relief, pottery wall tile- circa Song/Jin Dynasty depicting two mounted elephants engaged in battle. This has the original red, green and white pigments, which are still quite vivid after almost 1000 years. This is most likely from Shanxi Province. The depiction of “war elephants” is quite unusual, in that as far as I know, they were never used in China although some Southeast Asian kingdoms and India used them. No damage or repair, although the surface on right side is a bit rough. This could be further cleaned and smoothed down for cosmetic purposes at the expense of losing the color. When I originally acquired this, it was encrusted in heavily compacted mud (see enlargement for the “before” cleaning image”. W: 30.4cm/12in, H: 21.3cm/8.2in and thickness: 3.8cm/1.5in.
