Guest Book
Fine and rare 19th century, 2 paneled, ceremonial men’s “bell” cape (khing ta zhi) from the Southern Chin ethnic group in Burma- this piece would have been worn during religious and planting festivals. This is unique, in being woven with either hemp or flax fiber rather than cotton. The weaving is quite delicate and complicated; I put a single grain of rice to highlight the intricate and minute details of the blue and red alternating points. The bells come mainly from India and have a very sweet sound. There are three frays and a simple repair along the selvedge; given the age and rarity I would say it is in excellent condition. L: 76cm/30 and W: 34cm/13.2in.
