Pair of Large Liao Dynasty, dark amber glazed Gangwa ware jars from the Chifeng Kiln, Inner Mongolia. The Liao were a non Han culture that ruled in Manchuria and parts of Mongolia 907-1125 CE. This shape is fairly unique to Liao ceramics as it seeks to emulate Turkic West Asian metal work drinking vessels. There is fritting on the edge of the shoulder and mouthrim (clearly visible in enlargements) but otherwise in good condition with no breakage or cracks. H: 27cm/10.6in and D: 18.5cm/7.2in. Reference is from Noble Riders from Pines and Deserts: Artistic Legacy of the Qidan.
