Lovely gray pottery head of a woman from the Han Dynasty, Sichuan province. Early funerary art from Sichuan is quite distinct from the Han from the Central Plains of Shaanxi. In general Han Sichuan images show more emotion in their expressions and are far less abstract. Prior to their assimilation during the Qin Dynasty, Sichuan was composed of ethnically and politically separate non Han cultures. In my opinion this can be easily seen temperament and style of their art. This image is still has traces of red pigment on the lips and some “crust” on one side of the face, and a happy expression. H: 19cm/7.5in and W: 9.5cm/3.8in.
