Northern Qi Buddha

stock number: 0424

price: ~Sold to the U.S., thank you.~ $2200.USD/$17000.HKD

description: Rare marble head and torso of very early Chinese Buddhist work. This piece dates from the Northern Qi Dynasty (550-577 AD) and depicts Maitreya, the future Buddha. Originally the entire sculpture would show him in an upright sitting position on a stool like chair on a rectangular base with one leg crossed over another in ”Western Fashion” with one elbow set on this thigh and chin resting on his forearm and finger in a contemplation, with the other arm resting palm down on the ankle of the crossed leg. As far as I know this unusual combination of asana and mudra were unique in China only during the brief Northern Qi dynasty, although I believe that a similar posture was used in Korea at some point. The former owner discovered that the lower torso and legs and were not part of the original sculpture and had them cut out which accounts for evenly cut appearance at the torso and elbow. Please examine the detailed close-ups to observe the carbonized roots fused to the stone - an excellent indicator of age. Also view the other Northern Qi image following this one on my site to see how they can restore these old marble sculptures. This item is 100% authentic unlike 95% of the other decorative stone images but given old attributions one so often sees offered on Ebay and other venues. Condition as described. Dimensions; 24cm/9.5in height from base of torso to top of nimbus. 18cm/7.1in width.
