Tibetan Riding Saddle

stock number: 0614

price: $420.USD/$3200.HKD

description: 19th century Tibetan men’s saddle. Decorated in iron meander patterned brackets and fittings with sharkskin covering front and back. The front and back are also made with a hardwood, called “saddle wood”,(appropriately enough), by Tibetans and is highly prized and very expensive to have a saddle made with this wood today, unfortunately I do not know the botanical or English name. The lower frame appears to be made of a slightly softer wood perhaps elm. All the parts and repairs on this are old and original, the only restoration I have undertaken on this piece is to sand the bare wood a bit and apply neutrally colored wood oil. Condition: splits and cracks as visible in photos and the iron trim on the rear lower frame are missing other than that in pretty good shape, still very solid. Please note that the gap in the center of saddle is normal, cotton padding would be inserted (for obvious reasons) and then “re-upholstered” with wool tie-dyed p’ulo-thigma cloth periodically. Dimesions:48cm/19in total length and 28cm/11in total height.
