Burmese Pottery Jar

stock number: 0728

price: $400.USD/$3100.HKD

description: Very rare large Burmese red pottery jar with opaque slightly green glaze and covered with a clear glaze applied with a heavy brush to achieve the “marbled” effect. There is virtually nothing known about these Burmese ceramics except that the only site where they have been recovered is at the Tak Hill Top sites on the Thai side of the Thai/Burmese border. With what little literature is available, this is as yet, an unpublished shape and style. Dates from 14/16th CE, which is confirmable from datable Chinese ceramics from the same site strata. The kiln location has not yet been discovered, although some have suggested Pegu, Burma. The lugs have been repaired and repainted to almost exactly match the original and there are few worn chips along the rolled mouth rim. 27.8cm/10.9in height and 23cm/9in diameter.
