Burmese Ceramic Jar
stock number: 0763
price: $400.USD/$3100,HKD
description: Very rare and previously undocumented Burmese jar with heavy cream glaze. I have no idea what the original purpose for this jar was, perhaps it was an oil lamp as there are wide set lugs as well as holes in the splayed out foot to fasten it down to something. This is one of the very few Burmese pieces I have seen in perfect condition (except for one bare spot on one of the lugs) and no restoration. There is virtually nothing known about these Burmese ceramics except that the only site where they have been recovered is at the Tak Hill Top sites on the Thai side of the Thai/Burmese border. These pieces date from 14/16th CE, which is confirmable from datable Chinese ceramics from the same site strata. The kiln site has not yet been discovered, although some have suggested Pegu, Burma in which case would make it a Mon ceramic rather than Burmese. 24cm/9.5in height and 12.7/5in diameter at foot.
