Old mask from East or Central Timor. The previous owner told me what well might be an apocryphal tale- that this was recovered from “secret hiding place” after a brush fire that was caused by a skirmish between Fretilin and the Indonesian Army during the 1970’s. I was in West Timor in the 1980s and saw plenty of new copies of Timorese masks, which were stuck with horsehair and smoked over a fire to give it an antiqued appearance. This piece shows a genuine smooth natural wear (front and back) and is made of a hard wood. Approximately 50 or more years old. 28.5cm/11.4in height and 19cm/7.5 contoured width.
