description:
String of nine large carnelian and eight quartz crystal beads. L: 51cm/19.8in. The carnelian beads are about two thousand years old and came out of Cambodia - possibly much older. Similar beads have been found in late Bronze Age and early Iron Age sites throughout Southeast Asia as is documented in Burnished Beauty-White Orchid Press, Ornaments from The Past-The Bead Study Trust and Early Cultures of Mainland Southeast Asia-Charles Higham/River Books. As these have been found from many different sites in Vietnam, Burma and Thailand it is quite possible that they were made in Afghanistan and traded eastward through the millennia as the same hexagonal type of carnelian beads have also been unearthed there as well. Not so much published information is available on the crystal beads. Amongst the carnelian beads seven are hexagonally faceted and two are round while all the crystal beads are also hexagonally faceted but more in a ovoid and flattened shape and not as sophisticated in craftsmanship as the carnelians which leads me to think they are older. The longest carnelian is L: 5.5cm and the smallest is L: 3.5cm while the crystal beads are pretty much between L: 1.5cm and L: 1.7cm. This is an outstanding and impressive set with the carnelian giving it a warm feeling that is offset by the “iciness” of the quartz crystal. Most of the beads have a few small chips here and there and as well as inclusions in the stone which refracts the light nicely.
