Rawang basket
stock number: 0975
price: $300.USD/$2300.HKD
description:
Extra fine hill tribe shoulder basket from Yunnan, China. Remember when you went to the store and they did not give you a paper or plastic bag for your purchases? Neither do I. That is one of the reasons why I like this sort of thing, one day when we run out of oil and timber to make disposable bags we will need examples like this to relearn how they were made. I have never (yes I really mean never), seen such a fine example of tribal basket work in SE Asia except for some Penan and Bidayuh work out of Borneo. This was sourced in large market in Kunming and is from the Rawang, a Chin subgroup scattered mostly through Burma but with isolated villages in Thailand and China. This piece 40 to 80 years old and is woven by by men, which is unusual as basketry is usually considered women's work in Asia. The rattan is still very pliable and the only repair seems to be a piece of wire used to replace a broken rattan loop to accomodate a shoulder strap- outstanding condition for an antique basket. H: 25cm/9.9in and W: 24.5cm/9.6in (at base).
