Bouyi blanket
Rare antique, circa late 19th CE- early 20th CE, three paneled silk embroidered diamond and meander pattern on cotton blanket from the Bouyi people of Guizhou and Guangxi Zhuang. All materials are hand spun and woven. It is very uncommon to find a complete old tribal blanket from any of the Southwest China minorities these days. There is one small hole noted in enlargements where the panels are joined together and some threadbare lines, but the cotton warp and weft are well intact. One unusual thing about this piece is the cotton base is dyed blue as most commonly the silk threads are embroidered onto undyed cotton. The dyes appear to be a mix of natural and chemical. W: 108cm/42.5in and L: 152cm/60in.
