Dian Culture agate beads
stock number: 1470
price: $300.USD/$2300.HKD
description:
Fine and rare set of five agate “nipple” beads from the Dian civilization circa 500 BCE. The Dian were a non Han culture that was centered around Dianchi Lake in Yunnan, Southwest China. Their bronze artifacts show they had a strong affinity with the Southeast Asian Dong Son Culture. The only history of these mysterious people was recorded by the Han who say they eventually became their vassal state, because the Dian King was accorded an official title. All the physical evidence (bronzes, weapons etc) that has surfaced so far show that these were a fierce warlike people, so this could just as easily be interpreted as being bought off by the Han to stay out of their territories, (a common practice amongst the Chinese, Romans and English). These pieces could be best described as sequins on Dian beaded burial shroud. Please note the measurement in photos is metric.
