Yunnan Buddha

stock number: 1681

price: $600.USD/$4600.HKD

description: Fine and rare “Nong Si” (as they are called in Thai) Buddha from Yunnan, Xishuangbanna Dai people as they are called in China. This piece is cast in the Ming Era (1368 CE – 1644 CE) style and the traces of lacquer, gilt and patina indicate that this is of the period. I have one other piece on my site (item #1506), not as old but from the same region. I have not seen anything written up on this style, usually in Thailand they are referred to as Chinese and in China people don’t seem to know. The Dai are basically part of the greater Shan culture with closer linguistic and cultural with the affinities Thais than the Han Chinese. This type of bronze is cast in ceramic molds (which are used many times over) rather than wax cast which accounts for the consistency of style through the centuries and their inconsistency of ages. A few casting flaws beneath the legs, -typical of this Ming style of bronze casting, otherwise perfect original condition. H: 12.7cm/5in and W: 6.5cm/2.5in.
