| Exceptionally fine old coconut scraper made of solid golden teak carved in the shape of a tiger. I purchased this on a recent trip to Northern Thailand, where the vendor said this was 200 years old and from Mandalay, Burma but I think 70 to 90 years old is a more reasonable dating, and might quite possibly be in the local Lanna style. This is one of the nicest examples I have seen in quite a few years. It is in all original condition, just as when it came out of the village. Usually these are waxed polished and painted to make them more decorative or sanded down to give the look of an abstract sculpture. The hand forged iron scraper is dull from use but it would be easy enough to sharpen the serrated edge with a small triangular file. Please note in enlargement six this also doubled as the kitchen cutting board, from all the chopping marks, no doubt having diced a million onions. It weighs 8kg unpacked, and is in excellent condition. This could use a good soak in heavy teak oil but I will leave this up to the discretion of the buyer. Total length: 59cm/23in. | |||||||||||
