description: Liao or Jin Dynasty red agate horse fitting, circa 10th CE – 12th CE carved in a domed “T” shape. Reference photos are from Sparkling Splendours and Noble Riders from Pines and Deserts- Artistic Legacy of the Qidan. According to the “Qidan” book “T” shaped horse fittings were rare amongst the Chinese during the Tang but similar items of this period were found in Southern Siberia of the time. The Liao (Khitan) and Jin (Jurchen) came out of what is now Mongolia and occupied large parts of China. The Liao were eventually defeated by the Jin who in their turn were defeated (along with just about everyone else) by the unified Mongol tribes under Genghis Khan. There are some chips on the top of the dome, this piece has been recently repolished in an attempt to get them out. L: 5cm/2in H: 3.5cm/1.3in.
