Large painting of a carp regarding a pearl* circa,early 20th century. Dimensions- mounted L: 236cm/93in and W: 81cm/32in, actual painting- L: 51in/129cm and W: 66cm/26in. This scroll painting is so large I had to photo it hanging on my garden gate. The carp is a typical Chinese auspicious symbol usually meant to convey a congratulatory message to someone who accomplishes a major achievement, such as getting a promotion, completion of exams or staring a new business. There are a few bug holes in the upper part of mounting and a repaired tear near the calligraphy but overall presentable and very decorative with a friendly looking big fat fish. The little elongated fish is a “snake head” (very tasty steamed with a lot of ginger).* The pearl may also represent a reflection of the moon but as the carp is closely associated with dragons and dragons with flaming pearls, this is my best guess. The calligraphy and artists seal translates as follows...
"After the style of a Song Dynasty artist (painted) on the 'Qixi Festival'
> (the festival that commemorates the romance of the heavenly cowboy and weaving maid that falls on the 7th day of the 7th month on lunar calendar) in jiayin year" (corresponding to 1914), signed Wu Qing
